lazio defeated by atletico

Lazio paid the price for poor finishing and even worse defending as they fell 3-1 to Atletico Madrid in the Amsterdam Tournament.

The Biancocelesti had the better of the first half, but did not turn enough of their possession into chances.

Tommaso Rocchi’s header went over and Stefano Mauri was very unlucky not to take the lead, as his glancing touch on a Cristian Ledesma set-piece was palmed on to the bar by the Spanish goalkeeper.

Atletico took the lead just before half-time when a Jose Antonio Reyes free kick was curled to the back post for a Braulio volley, although Mobido Diakhite’ completely missed the ball and should have intercepted.

Goran Pandev came on to give the attack more vigour, moving Mauri to his more habitual Trequartista position.

Third choice ‘keeper Tommaso Berni flew to fingertip a Reyes curler round the post, although he had been flagged offside anyway.

Substitute Pandev unleashed a left-foot rocket from the edge of the box that the Atletico ‘keeper pushed round the near post. From the resulting corner the ball came off the post and Diakhite’ turned it over the bar from six yards.

The Madrid shot-stopper had an embarrassing moment on Ledesma’s free kick, but made up for it with his reaction to the loose ball.

Once again, Lazio had the possession, Madrid got the goals, as former Liverpool midfielder Luis Garcia thumped a left-foot screamer into the far top corner.

Just 98 seconds later the Biancocelesti finally managed to hit the back of the net, as Pandev’s through ball sent Mauri clear to slot past the ‘keeper.

That lasted only a couple of minutes too, as more poor defending at the back post allowed Reyes to volley home Atletico’s third unmarked.

Lazio lose 3-1 and end the Amsterdam Tournament with just two points, having also lost their first match 2-1 to Arsenal.

Atletico Madrid 3-1 Lazio

Costinha considers Atletico Madrid future
tribalfooball.com - August 07, 2007

Costinha admits he could be on the move from Atletico Madrid. The Portugal international midfielder said: "At the moment I am not thinking about leaving. However, I want to play regularly and if things don't change by August 20 I will have to consider my options.
"A return to Portugal? It depends on the offer and the project. There are three great clubs [Porto, Benfica, Sporting Lisbon] in Portugal."

I don't want him, he's old and he's finished. I would rather have had the money for Simao rather than the extra players.

Yeah, although I think the replacements are great! Simão, Forlán...

Torres wanted to leave, that's why he's gone. Hopefully he'll come back to Atlético in better shape than he was last season, for example.

Kuyt backs Torres

Kuyt backs Torres

Dirk Kuyt is confident it won't take long for Liverpool's Fernando Torres to find his scoring touch.

Torres, signed from Atletico Madrid for £20.2million in the summer, instantly linked up well with Kuyt in the Reds' 2-1 success over Aston Villa on Saturday - their first opening day victory during manager Rafael Benitez's era.
The Spain striker squandered one gilt-edged chance in the first half but was involved in the build-up to the opener - an own goal from Villa defender Martin Laursen - and looked sharp until he was taken off with 20 minutes remaining.

real quality
Kuyt said: "I thought Fernando played well. We had some good chances and we looked good together. The first goal was an own goal but the teamwork between the two of us leading up to it was really good.
"Now we will just try to work on things and keep going in the right direction. It's his first time in the Premier League but I don't think he will need too long a time to adjust. Every player needs a few games when they come in but he has shown already some quality. With a bit of luck he could have scored his first goal for Liverpool. He is real quality."

Atletico Madrid table three-year contract offer to Riquelme
tribalfooball.com - August 18, 2007

Atletico Madrid have tabled a contract offer to the agents of Villarreal midfielder Juan Roman Riquelme.
The Argentina international's representatives, Marco Franchi and Daniel Bolotnicoff, are currently in Spain considering Atletico's proposal.

The deal is for three years at the same £2.5 million-a-season wages Riquelme currently earns at Villarreal.

Football officials and managers say a lot of things to derail media attention from them and whatever they are doing. I never believe anything till' I see, I guess thats how the business works.

Atalanta close to deal for Atletico Madrid's Costinha
tribalfooball.com - August 19, 2007

Atalanta are closing in on Atletico Madrid midfielder Costinha.
The Portugal international is set to be granted a free transfer by Atletico after dropping well down the midfielder's pecking order this summer.

Costinha, 32, is set to be offered a three-year deal by Atalanta, whose coach Gigi del Neri worked with the midfielder during his short spell in charge of Porto.

After what he did to his teamate
Quote:
Madrid - Veteran Portuguese midfielder Costinha is to leave Atletico Madrid for Italian club Atalanta, the digital version of Marca reported Sunday night. Marca claims that Costinha, 32, has been allowed by Atletico to leave free of charge after a disappointing season at the Estadio Calderon.

He has agreed to sign a three-year contract with Atalanta and will be presented to the media Monday in Bergamo.

In other Spanish transfer news, Uruguayan defender Alejandro Lembo is set to return home to play for Montevideo club Danubio after being released by Betis.

Lembo, 29, has failed to convince in his four seasons at Betis and has spent more time on the subs' bench than on the field.

Atletico Madrid coach warns Birmingham off Luccin
tribalfooball.com - August 24, 2007

Atletico Madrid coach Javier Aguirre insists midfielder Peter Luccin is not for sale.
The Frenchman has rejected a proposal to open new contract negotiations with Atletico and has held talks with Birmingham City this week.

However, Aguirre said: "He is most important for me. A pillar. He imposes himself in midfield, he has experience and quality. Under no circumstances am I thinking about selling him because he is in my plans."

Luccin assures Atletico Madrid directors he wants to stay
tribalfooball.com - August 24, 2007

Peter Luccin has handed Atletico Madrid a huge boost by assuring them he wants to play out his career at the Vicente Calderon.

Having indicated this week that he was ready to reject overtures of a new contract and move abroad, the Frenchman contacted Atletico directors yesterday to assure them that his intention was to retire at the club, says El Mundo Deportivo.

Atletico will now open talks over a new contract with their No5, who has less than 12 months to run on his existing deal.

Meanwhile, new Brazilian striker Diego Costa has left Atletico to join Segunda Liga Cadiz on a season-long loan.

Atletico Madrid contact Barcelona for Thiago Motta
tribalfooball.com - August 24, 2007

Atletico Madrid have made contact with Barcelona over the availability of midfielder Thiago Motta.
With Costinha expected to join Atalanta and Peter Luccin in talks with Birmingham City, Atletico suddenly find themselves short of defensive midfielders and have asked Barca to name their price for Motta.

Barca want at least £2 million for the Brazilian.

Reyes: Atletico will beat Real Madrid 2-0
tribalfooball.com - August 24, 2007

Atletico ace Jose Antonio Reyes has thrown down the gauntlet to Real Madrid ahead of tomorrow's big opening day derby.

"We will win 2-0 in the Bernabeu and I will score," declared Reyes. "I hope to be able to score in the Bernabeu.

"Their defeat to Sevilla has hurt them a little. We must take advantage of this."

Asked how he will feel on his return to his former club, Reyes added: "I sincerely do not know. But, anyway, I am now an Atletico player. I play in Madrid and my team is Atletico.

"I don't know how the Real Madrid fans will react to me. I hope they treat me well. I did not leave on bad terms."

So?

This is a new beginnig for him, a fresh start. With Atletico he was always expected to be the star, the GUY on the team. When your team underachieves, so will you.

At Liverpool he doesn't have as much pressure to perform. He also has great players around him that will help mold him into a great player, like Steven Gerrard. He has always had way more than enough talent, its always been the mental part that he hasn't gotten down.

I see Torrest reaching his potential at Liverpool.

Err... he had a great career in Atlético, only the last couple of years where worse. That's why it's logical that he went to another club.

Atalanta finalise deal for Atletico Madrid's Costinha

Atalanta are finalising Costinha's move from Atletico Madrid today. The Portugal international passed his Atalanta medical yesterday and agreed terms on a three-year contract.
Atalanta are this morning ironing out final details with Atletico over Costinha's move. The veteran is expected to be granted a free transfer by his Spanish Liga club.
