DC United Youth

Behind the Badge: Undefeated youth

Bryan Arguez and the U.S. U-20 national team had a very successful tournament.

D.C. United's U-17 youth development team remains undefeated as it leaves the group stages of the Soccer United Marketing's inaugural youth development soccer tournament, SUM U-17 Cup. The United boys upheld the D.C. United legacy of success of the first team by kicking off the tournament with a 3-1 victory against Colorado. Shane Cooke notched two goals and Shane Murnane added the third. Murnane scored again in the team's second game of the tournament, a 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew on Saturday. Marcus Douglas also scored a goal. "As a staff we were pleased to keep the unbeaten record going into the third game against Salt Lake," said coach Chris Megaloudis, "but we believed we should have left with three points after leading the Crew twice."
The team got such a result on Monday with a stunning 4-0 shutout against Salt Lake. The team took the lead in the first half off of a goal by Mike Funes, who was assisted by goalkeeper Bill Hamid. The second half got off to a quick start as forward Chris Hegngi scored after a nice build up through the D.C. midfield. The scoring was rounded out by Shane Cooke and William "JR" Bioh.
With the win, the team is assured first place in the group and a spot in the semifinals. Following the draw, United learned that it will play the Los Angeles Galaxy U-17s Tuesday evening. Should the team advance, they will play in the championship game on Thursday.
Arguez returns
United midfielder and U.S. U-20 men's national team member Bryan Arguez returned to full training Tuesday after national team duty in Canada for the U-20 FIFA World Cup. The United States had a strong start and remained undefeated in its group after a 1-1 draw with Korea, a 6-1 victory over Poland and a 2-1 win against Brazil. The team played well in its 2-1 victory over Uruguay in the round of 16, but were defeated in the quarterfinals 2-1 by Austria in overtime.
Legends at RFK
Jaime Moreno was not the only Latin American soccer legend at RFK on Saturday. Teofilo "Nene" Cubillas of Peru and Gilberto Yearwood of Honduras were honored before United's home game last Saturday against FC Dallas after attending D.C. United's second annual Latin American Festival, a celebration of Latin American culture, music and sport that took place at RFK Stadium before the game.
Cubillas, nicknamed "El Nene" (the Baby), started his professional soccer career with Peruvian club Alianza Lima at the early age of 16. At just 20 years old, Cubillas led Peru to the quarterfinals of the 1970 World Cup and was later named the South American Footballer of the Year in 1972. He played in three World Cup finals ('70, '78 and '82) and is the seventh leading scorer in World Cup History with 10 goals. Currently he works for FIFA as a member of their Technical Study Group covering the last three Gold Cups as well as last year's WC 06 in Germany.
Yearwood, a gifted central defender, has been recognized as one of Honduras' best soccer players. He played for the Honduras national team in the 1982 World Cup and was an essential component of the national team in many FIFA matches until his retirement in 1993. Currently, he is the head coach of Atletico Olanchano in the Honduran first division.

Atlético de Madrid Latest News/Rumors/Transfers

Benfica

At Madrid reach agreement with Benfica and double the player salary
to 4.8 million euros a year

400 thousand euros a month, a offer the couldn't be refuse
OJOGO ONLINE

Simão no Atlético por 20 milhões de euros
RICARDO LEMOS

I have lost ALL respect I ever had for Simao. He was once my favouite player, but now he can get fucked. If he had gone to one of the best teams in Europe, I'd take iton the chin and think ok, he's done his best for Benfica, he's given everything we just haven't won enough to make him stay. But the fact is, he's gone to a team I consider not better than Benfica. A team that is not even playing Champions League football, if Simao wants to be recognised as one of the best players in Europe, he needs to play in Europes premier competition. This shows a total lack of ambition, he could have furthered his career so much more at a team like Valencia and Liverpool who compete for honours every season. Now, it seems to me that he is a money-grabbing, selfish ****.

I never could have expected this of him, he has been loyal to Benfica throughout, been a great captain and could have ended up as being one of our real legends. I don't see that anymore, not after tthis when he's ditched us for a team like Atletico.

As I said, I would have taken it if he'd gone to a Real Madrid, Liverpool, etc, he didn't exactly lack suitors. But the fact that he has gone for money really disgusts me.

Belleti to sign on loan

Beletti on loan from Barcelona, I like the kid Di Maria was very impressived with
U 20 Argentina world cup team
OJOGO ONLINE
Belletti e Di Maria são reforços
RICARDO LEMOS

Atletico Madrid sending two players to Benfica for Simao
tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Atletico Madrid are expected to confirm today that two players will move to Benfica as part of Simao Sabrosa's £15 million return to Spain. Former Barcelona winger Simao is expected to be unveiled today by Atletico after undergoing a medical and putting pen to paper on a four-year contract.
Marca says two players will move to Benfica in part-exchange. Portuguese duo Ze Castro, who attracted an inquiry from Chelsea earlier this summer, and Costinha are tipped to be the two in question.
"I am very happy to be in Madrid, I come to Atletico to succeed in Spain," declared Simao at Madrid airport yesterday.

Emirates Cup: Wenger Pleased With Van Persie

Emirates Cup: Wenger Pleased With Van Persie

Wenger used Arsenal's two Emirates Cup matches against Paris Saint Germain and Inter Milan to experiment with his team selection, and was rewarded with two 2-1 victories and a handsome piece of silverware.
The Gunners were inscintillating form against Italian champions Inter, but had to come from behind to clinch a deserved victory, with Robin van Persie scoring a brilliant late winner, dragging the ball back inside his marker with a dazzling sleight of foot before crashing the ball into the net.
"It was a great goal, but it was a great team performance," said Wenger.
"We played well and that's the most important thing.
"We know Robin can score special goals and he did that again, but we created lots of chances, developed good team play, and played in the way we like to play at a good pace.
"In a physical championship like in England, you have to be ready."
Dutch striker Van Persie broke a metatarsal while scoring against Manchester United in January, and had missed the rest of the season.
He still finished as the club's top scorer with 13 goals - one more than departed captain Thierry Henry, who had also been sidelined for much of last season.
Wenger said: "We missed him and Thierry together last season. On the score sheet it was a bit too much."
Talking of their involvement for Arsenal last season in the Premiership alone, Wenger stressed: "Robin played 17 games last year and Thierry 16, 33 games together. Robin scored 11 goals in 17, Thierry 10 in 16. You could multiply that by two."
Wenger is hoping that his summer signing from Dinamo Zagreb, Croatian striker Eduardo da Silva, will be available for the Amsterdam Tournament later this week after an appeal to the Home Office for a work permit.
But the French tactician believes that Van Persie is ready to take on the burden of expectation now that Henry has left.
"The media always pick one or two out [superstars]. Who will it be? " the Arsenal manager reflected.
"The players who are picked out mustn't forget the team-play, the teamwork and that we must play as a team.
"That's not easy to resist when you're picked out as a star. But Robin can handle [the pressure on him to score the goals]."
Wenger also revealed that Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes would not be returning to the Emirates Stadium after his loan period at Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid are said to be leading the chase for Reyes, and Wenger said: "We will make an announcement shortly, but he will not come back here. I cannot tell you more than that at the moment."
And Wenger also insisted there was "no truth" in a report that he had already lined up former Newcastle and West Ham manager Glenn Roeder for the position of director of football with Arsenal.
"I like Glenn Roeder, but I've not met with him," he said.
"At the moment I've not decided to appoint him. He would feature on a list of candidates, though."
Beaten Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini said he believed Arsenal have a bright future, although they may not yet be ready to challenge for the Premiership title.
"This team have so many young good players, but I am not sure if they will be able to compete with Chelsea and Manchester United [next season]," said Mancio.
"However, you never know in football because sometimes strange things can happen.
"I am sure, though, that this team has got a bright future."

Foi onde me afirmei!"

Atletico Madrid president: Simao a world star

Atletico Madrid president: Simao a world star
tribalfooball.com - July 28, 2007

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo was delighted to unveil Simao Sabrosa yesterday - the most expensive signing in the club's history.
"In Portugal he is an icon and one of the most important players for his country. And, mainly, for us he is one of the most important players who has given much to Portuguese soccer in these last years and we think that he will be the great reference of Spanish soccer in the coming ones," Cerezo said of the £15 million arrival from Benfica. "He is blessed with a great ability with the ball and extraordinary pace. That indicates that we are in the presence of a great talent of international soccer."
For his part, Simao said: "I must be grateful to Atletico Madrid in their efforts in my signing. I remember when I was with Barcelona, the Atletico fans were always very enthusiastic. And that remained with me.
"I can promise to you that I am going to work to help the club and to take it where it must be: among the top three of the Liga and to win titles. I am going to do everything I can to achieve this."

Atletico Madrid Plot Stadium Move

Atletico Madrid Plot Stadium Move

The Vicente Calderon Stadium, which opened its doors in 1966, is set to close.

Madrid City Council and Atletico Madrid today signed an agreement that will begin demolition in the coming years, with a park set to take the place of the historic arena.

Mahou, the Madrid brewing giant, is also party to the deal, having a facility that borders the Vicente Calderon.

Madrid City Council is eager to demolish the centrally-located stadium in order to alter the path of the adjacent Manzanares river; with Atletico equally enthusiastic to move to a bigger location, this agreement was reached amicably.

Atletico hope to move to the upcoming Olympic Stadium (Estadio La Peineta), which would become their property in 2016. However, they hope to move in as tenants as soon as 2012, upon completion of the new ground.

Their new stadium will boast 73,000 seats, and increased parking and transportation facilities, the latter of which was a considerable factor. While the Vicente Calderon enjoyed nearby service from the excellent Madrid metro, lack of vehicular parking was a major concern and one hoped to be addresed by the new ground.

As the name suggests, the new Olympic stadium is being designed with Madrid's Olympic bid in mind. Should this succeed, Atletico would need to temporarily relieve ownership of the facility for the duration of the Games.

Rossi Sold to Villareal

Quote:
MADRID, July 31 (Reuters) - Villarreal have reached an agreement with Manchester United to sign striker Giuseppe Rossi on a six-year contract, the Primera Liga club said on Tuesday.

Rossi will take a medical and be presented at the Madrigal on Wednesday. Media reports have put the transfer fee at around 10 million euros ($13.7 million).

The 20-year-old American-born Italian spent the second half of last season on loan with Serie A side Parma, and scored nine goals to help them avoid relegation.

Rossi, an Italian under-21 international, joined United from Parma in July 2004 and last year signed a contract extension until 2010.

Villarreal have been on the hunt for a striker after selling Uruguayan top scorer Diego Forlan to Atletico Madrid for 21 million euros last month.

They finished fifth in the Primera Liga to earn a place in next season's UEFA Cup.
I hope the best for Rossi

Here is a idea, Why not play game at stadium of light, this time and then in round 16 at the ocean stadium. Very simple.
