Redknapp salutes goal king Muntari

Written by: AFP

Portsmouth´s Sulley Muntari (L) is tackled by Manchester United´s Wes Brown during the Premiership match at Fratton Park in Portsmouth, southern England, August 2007. Muntari hit a superb double strike to help high-flying Portsmouth romp to a 3-1 win against Aston Villa.

BIRMINGHAM, England (AFP) - Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp saluted Sulley Muntari after the Ghanaian helped his side beat Aston Villa 3-1 on Saturday.

Muntari had only scored twice since his pre-season move from Udinese but he made up for that with two stunning goals at Villa Park.

He struck with a first half strike from long-range before bending in a brilliant second after the break and Redknapp was quick to lead the praise for his seven million pound midfielder.

"He's got a great left-foot and they were two fantastic finishes," Redknapp said. "The first one was a great strike. I was right behind it. The second one probably moved as well."

Glen Johnson admitted the Portsmouth players are used to Muntari's thunderbolts after seeing him in training every day.

"They were fantastic goals. We see it all the time. He's got a wonderful foot and does it in training a lot. We expect it," Johnson said.

Portsmouth moved into fifth place after their sixth successive away win but Redknapp was left with a bitter taste after being abused by Villa fans.

He stopped to exchange words with several supporters sitting behind the visitors behind and was still angry after the match.

"You've got people saying stuff behind you with little kids shouting filth. I didn't bring my kids up to talk like that," Redknapp said.

"Do we have to keep standing there and accepting that? It didn't happen when I went with my dad to watch Arsenal play every Saturday. There was none of this sort on nonsense going on.

"Maybe I shouldn't get upset but I do. What hurts me the most is when I see someone going at it, when they have got their little son by their side.

"He can talk how he wants to me. But doing it in front of his lad and making filthy gestures just stinks. Maybe it is a reflection on society."

Two outstanding strikes from Sulley Muntari helped Portsmouth to a sixth straight away win against a shell-shocked Aston Villa.

Villa dominated the first half but fell behind early on when scrappy play in their penalty area led to Craig Gardner prodding the ball into his own net.

Muntari's first was a left-footed strike from 25 yards and he then beat two defenders to score with a low shot.

A late penalty for Gareth Barry was little reward for Villa.

Interview: Aston Villa manager Martin O'Neill
Interview: Portsmouth assistant boss Tony Adams

Portsmouth had not won in the top-flight at Villa Park for 52 years but they ultimately deserved to end that miserable record if only because of the brilliant goals from Muntari, who produced the two rays of sunshine on a rain-lashed afternoon.

Pompey opened the scoring on 10 minutes after the ball fell to Noe Pamarot wide on the right.

Wilfred Bouma failed to deal with Pamarot's miscued shot and in the confusion Gardner prodded the ball past a stranded Scott Carson and into his own net.

That was harsh on Villa, who pressed hard to get the equaliser, and they were offered two gilt-edged chances to do so.

Both fell to Martin Laursen, who will rue those missed opportunities. In the 18th minute, his free header was saved by David James, and just two minutes later he squandered an even better chance.

Ashley Young's free-kick found him totally unmarked but this time he headed wide from just five yards out. It was almost a carbon copy of his earlier chance - only easier.

Further opportunities fell to Gabriel Agbonlahor and Gareth Barry in a first half Villa controlled.

But they were made to pay the penalty with the first of Muntari's screamers after 40 minutes. The Villa defence failed to close him down as he fired a left-footed shot into the top right-hand corner from 25 yards. It was an unlikely end to the first half.

Muntari's second shortly into the second period was even better. He robbed Nigel Reo-Coker in the Villa half and nutmegged Zat Knight before shooting low into the bottom corner.

Villa didn't deserve to be 3-0 down and they responded well, although they only had a single goal to show for their efforts and that came from the penalty spot.

It was awarded when Distin was adjudged to have brought down Young on the edge of the box with a quite unnecessary challenge and Barry stepped up to reduce the deficit.

Villa continued to seek a way through with Patrick Berger firing over the bar and Olof Mellberg shooting wide.

But as they pressed, Portsmouth threatened to do even worse damage on the break with Papa Bouba Diop guilty of a terrible miss late on.

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill:
"The defeat is disappointing because we had more than enough possession to get something out of the game.

"Our spirit and determination was there although at times it might have been misdirected but I have no complaints about the attitude of my players.

"This defeat is a body blow because confidence was high but we have to bounce back from this setback."

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp:
"It is a terrific performance away from home. We are on a great run, scoring goals away from home and looking very strong.

"Villa Park is not an easy place to come and to score three goals as well as missing other good opportunities was a tremendous performance.

"However, I would think that the top four are on another level to us. They have got the squads and are strong.

"These are great times for Portsmouth, however, 11 games unbeaten. We should make the most of these times."

Sulley Muntari's superb double strike helped secure a sixth successive away win for Harry Redknapp's Portsmouth side and earned them their first victory at Villa Park for 37 years.

The 7million signing from Udinese gave Aston Villa keeper Scott Carson no chance with two stunning left-footed drives to double his goal tally for the campaign.

A Craig Gardner own goal had set Pompey on their way to victory and all the home side could muster in reply was a late Gareth Barry penalty.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill had predicted Portsmouth could challenge for a top four spot - and it was hard to argue with the Northern Irishman on the evidence of this performance.

They are now unbeaten in 11 Barclays Premier League games and have an ideal blend of being threatening on the counterattack, creative in midfield and rock solid at the back.

And in David James they have a keeper at the top of his game despite now being 37.

Villa were the first to settle and Ashley Young curled a first-time effort just wide from the edge of the box after good play by Craig Gardner.

proper contact

But after eight minutes poor defending by Villa gifted the visitors the opener through a Gardner own goal.

Kranjcar had a shot deflected over the bar by Olof Mellberg and the Croatian international took the corner himself and picked out Pedro Mendes on the edge of the box.

He did not appear to make a proper contact on his low ball into the danger area but Wilfred Bouma sliced his attempted clearance across the goal and Gardner, in attempting to deny Benjani, could only turn the ball past Scott Carson.

Villa tried to retaliate and had appeals for a penalty rejected by Riley after a challenge on Gabriel Agbonlahor by Sol Campbell.

Laursen missed an even better opportunity after Young swung a curling free-kick into the box and he was unmarked when he headed wide from eight yards out.

Despairing dive

Villa were now pressing hard for an equaliser and James was alert to block a shot from a narrow angle by Agbonlahor.

Campbell did well to block a shot on the turn from Carew before a stunning strike from Muntari doubled Portsmouth's lead after 39 minutes.

Glen Johnson rolled the ball into his path some 20 yards out and he hammered an unstoppable rising drive past Carson into the roof of the net.

James ensured Pompey maintained their two-goal advantage by producing a superb save to turn over Agbonlahor's shot on the turn.

Kranjcar was only inches wide with a shot on the turn after finding space on the edge of the Villa box.

Villa tried to retaliate and Carew's glancing header flew just past the far post from a Young centre.

But after an hour Muntari scored another superb goal to put Portsmouth 3-0 ahead. He dispossessed Reo-Coker in midfield and then surged forward before curling a left-footed drive past the despairing dive of Carson.

Barry pulled one back from the penalty spot for the home side after Distin was adjudged to have brought down Young but it was too little, too late for the home side.
