Kelly described Mido and Ghaly as top class players and added that the image of Mido as troublesome player is only a misconception. "Mido is a talented player. He's a world traveller almost already and he's kind of proven himself in every league. the player concluded. It should be noted that Birmingham's boss Steve Bruce is keen on signing both Egyptians permanently for a fee worth £9m (£6m for Mido and £3m for Ghaly). According to British souces, both sides agreed on transfer details and the Egyptians will be ready to help their new side in the Premiership which is going to kick off in a couple of weeks. The only problem that might face both Egyptians is their lack of match practice as both didn't attend preseason preparations with Tottenham. | ||

Rafael Benitez's side take on Pompey in the final of the Asia Trophy in Hong Kong Stadium on Friday evening. And Redknapp is confident that after a summer of heavy investment, the coming campaign will not prove to be another false dawn for Reds supporters. "I do think they will be contenders this year," he said. "They're looking very strong. The backbone of the team is still Carragher and Gerrard, two homegrown players, but they've added a lot of quality again and will be a lot closer to Manchester United and Chelsea. "Tottenham are a team that could push into the top four this year as well if anyone's going to. They've got that bigger squad and have spent a lot of money over the last couple of years so they'll be very strong. "West Ham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, they'll all improve, but I think everyone will have a go this year. "We'll try to improve on what we did last season. We finished ninth and missed out on Europe on the last day of the season, but I think with this squad the aim is to get a European place this year and I think it's possible. He added: "I'm quite happy with the squad. "Unlike other years where we've been desperate to get players in just to have half a chance, we're strong this year. If I can add a bit extra, I will, but I've got to find the right player." |

The hearing will take place on 9th August, just two days before Derby kick off their Premier League campaign at home to Portsmouth Davies was charged with using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official during the match at Southend back in January. "It has taken a long time. And it is not great timing two days before the first league game," Davies told The Sun. "But I just need to go and put my case across and will hopefully be able to sit in the dugout for our first game. "I will explain my case and talk about what took place that day and hopefully be found not guilty with regards to what actually happened, but of course I'd rather be on the training ground. "I will not change who I am and what I am nor will I apologise for that." |

Davies said: "It would be nice to have everything sorted for our opener with Portsmouth on August 11. "The market has gone crazy this summer but that's modern football. "It's very easy right now to sign players if you are prepared to pay over top dollar on fees and wages. "But if you want value for money you must wait until the sensible negotiations start in the last week of the transfer window. "That's when the best deals are done." |

After a goalless 90 minutes against Liverpool, James denied both Fernando Torres and Yossi Benayoun from 12 yards as Pompey held their nerve to triumph in the pre-season tournament in Hong Kong that also featured Fulham and local side South China. But it was during normal time that the 36-year-old truly excelled - a fantastic reflex stop to keep out a powerful close-range header from Dirk Kuyt in the first half and one almost as good to deny Torres in the second the highlights of another impressive display. And his exploits in keeping the Reds at bay not only earned him the player of the tournament award but also another glowing endorsement from his boss. "It's what I always say, he is the best goalkeeper in England and we're very fortunate to have him," enthused Redknapp. "I spoke to Dave Beasant, who was a great goalkeeper and is the goalkeeping coach at Fulham, and he said he's worth 15 points for the team and he is not exaggerating - he is that good." |

Keane felt Nugent had spent too long considering a move to Sunderland and withdrew his offer. But the player responded last night by saying he had every right to take time over the biggest decision of his career. "I wanted some time to speak to my family about it. I don't think there was anything wrong in that - most players would have done the same," said Nugent. "Roy Keane took it the wrong way. He withdrew his bid without saying anything and that was that. "It was disappointing for me because I had taken the time to talk with them but I don't have any regrets about what happened because I have joined Portsmouth. "Harry Redknapp made me feel wanted. He didn't try to rush me into anything. We spoke, he showed me around and told me about his plans for the club and then told me to go away and think about it. "Once you speak with Harry, it's very difficult to say no. I suppose that comes through years of experience in dealing with footballers, something that Roy Keane has yet to gain as a manager. "I didn't snub Sunderland - it was the other way round." |
