Man City's Richards back for Portsmouth clash

Manchester City defender Micah Richards expects to play today against Portsmouth.

Richards told BBC Sport: "It was frustrating for me to miss that game through injury. I was kicking every ball - like any player I just wanted to be out there.

"I went down to the changing room afterwards just to congratulate everybody because it was not an easy game.

"Sunderland work hard and have some good players. It was never going to be a walkover so it was a good three points to get.

"We did not play well, and people may say we are riding our luck at the moment, but we are not third for no reason."

Portsmouth boss Redknapp against foreign limits

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp doesn't want foreign limits introduced into the Premiership.

Redknapp said: "I can't see it making the situation much different for English kids to come through.

"There will always be some, a few. The good ones will always get their chance but where are they nowadays? Go out and find some for me. It's difficult.

"There are a couple at Crystal Palace who look good prospects but I think, generally, kids here don't grow up playing football any more.

"They come home from school and they all have computers and a million things to watch on TV.

"It is difficult with what is happening on the streets now. Can kids play safely on the streets like they did in my day when we just kicked a football around until it was dark?

"Kids were hungry to find a way out from the poor areas and sport was how the talented ones did it.

"It's still the case with some of these young lads in parts of Africa. They are hungry and strong but here, apart from one or two areas, it is different now. There is not anywhere near the old level of desire.

"You can put kids into academies and coach them all you want but you can't teach them the desire. Few have the hunger that's needed."

Hart frustrates Portsmouth

Written by: AFP

Manchester City manager Sven Goran-Eriksson watches the Premiership match against Portsmouth at Fratton Park in Portsmouth, Southern England. Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart frustrated Portsmouth with a series of fine saves in his side´s 0-0 draw at Fratton Park on Sunday.
PORTSMOUTH, England (AFP) - Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart frustrated Portsmouth with a series of fine saves in his side's 0-0 draw at Fratton Park on Sunday.

Hart, 20, was making only his ninth appearance for City but he belied his youth with a mature display that consolidated Sven Goran Eriksson's side in third place in the Premier League.

Portsmouth had won five of their previous six league matches but they were unable to find a way past the inspired Hart and had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Hart modestly gave the credit for his cleansheet to City's defenders. "It's a massive result for us but we've done it as a team and I don't take any credit for it," he said.

"We dug in and defended well. I was happy to make some good saves but I'm just doing my job."

Eriksson added: "Joe is a big talent and has already showed it with the England Under-21s. He will get better and better."

Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp admitted Hart was the game's key figure.

"I didn't think we did too much wrong," he said. "We hit the post and I thought the shot from Glen Johnson in the first half was in but the keeper made a fantastic save."

City's success has been built on a superb home record but they have been less impressive away from Eastlands, with their only league win on opposition territory coming on the opening day at West Ham.

Eriksson's team had bounced back from their 6-0 thrashing at Chelsea with two consecutive victories, but they showed a few signs of travel sickness here.

After a tepid opening from both sides, Hart produced the first moment of class when he turned away Benjani's shot. The rookie did even better in the 26th minute to keep his team level.

Portsmouth right-back Glen Johnson robbed Didi Hamann on the edge of the penalty area and curled in a left-foot shot that was heading for the top corner until Hart brilliantly tipped it onto the bar.

Hart made another smart save at full-stretch to push away Niko Kranjcar's shot after the Croatian had pushed past Vedran Corluka.

City finally had a sight of goal when Martin Petrov drove a first time effort straight at David James after 40 minutes.

Portsmouth were forcing the pace without the slice of luck needed to make the breakthrough.

Matt Taylor headed wide when well placed. And David Nugent was agonisingly close with 18 minutes to go when his shot deflected off Micah Richards and hit a post before rebounding to safety.

City offered sporadic threats. Darius Vassell missed a good chance when he scuffed wide and Petrov was denied by James again, but it was Portsmouth who finished on top.

Johnson was having a personal duel with Hart and the City goalkeeper won hands down. He foiled the Portsmouth defender again in the 74th minute with a brave save from Johnson's close range effort.

You see hart I might actually have started to like you if we won this game

Man City boss Eriksson hails Hart

Manchester City boss Sven Goran Eriksson believes Joe Hart is a future England No1 after their 0-0 draw at Portsmouth.

Eriksson insists Hart has the ability to become international number one - just two weeks after the young goalkeeper conceded six goals at Chelsea.

Since then Hart, City's England Under-21 goalkeeper, has had three successive clean sheets - against Bolton, Sunderland and now Portsmouth.

After the latest at Fratton Park in the Premier League, Eriksson was asked if he could see Hart in international colours - and his reply was unequivocal.

"Yes, he can do it," said the Swede.

"He is an under-21 already, and that usually means you can step up.

"He made some great saves today and yet he's still not happy with himself. I know why - it is his kicking."

Hart, 20, is keeping Sweden goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson and Danish star Kasper Schmeichel (on loan at Cardiff) out of the City side.

But Eriksson, who has been linked with a new wave of signings in January but denies any plans are in progress, said: "I've told him not to blame himself for that [the landslide of goals at Stamford Bridge].

"We had 10 other players on the field who should have defended better. But I could understand why he was down.

"It is not easy to come back after conceding six in a match. But he's done it, and we were a different side today to the one against Chelsea. We had to be.

"Sooner or later I have to decide whether we need another goalkeeper. I think it will be later. But our season is going well so far, and we can't complain about our home form. Away it has not been so good - but this, today, was much better.

"We could have won - but so could Portsmouth. They had chances, and we had chances. Darius Vassell, I thought was unlucky with one."

Redknapp happy with Portsmouth's Nugent

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp praised David Nugent after his performance in yesterday's 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

Nugent's display was a welcome boost for the striker who has been a flop so far, still looking for his first top-flight goal and hardly getting into the side.

Redknapp said: "He looked livelier today; if that shot had gone in it would have been nice for him - and us.

"We are looking for anybody to score. But that's good for David - he's only not been getting in because Kanu and Benji have done so well."

Portsmouth boss pulls Kanu, Utaka out of friendly

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is pulling Nwankwo Kanu and John Utaka out of the Nigeria squad this week.

Speaking after their 0-0 draw against Manchester City, Redknapp said: "I switched back to 4-4-2, because Kanu and Benjani were both fit and looking good. But we scored seven against Reading with just one man up front.

"Now Kanu's injured again. He won't be reporting to Nigeria for their internationals, because of a hamstring (problem) - and neither will John Utaka, who has a groin strain."

Adams pleased with Portsmouth striker Nugent

Portsmouth No2 Tony Adams says management was pleased with David Nugent's performance in their 0-0 draw with Manchester City.

Adams said: "David came on and worked very hard for the team, created himself a couple of chances and he was very unfortunate. As well as the one that hit the post, I think the second one was going in until Micah Richards got in the way of it.

"But if David keeps doing that, he will carve himself out a career here.

"Benjani was very similar and it takes time for players to settle."

Portsmouth boss Redknapp: I can't fit D'Alessandro into my system

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp won't be moving for unsettled Real Zaragoza midfielder Andres D'Alessandro.

Redknapp said: "I love the little fella but where do you play him? It's like Geovanni at Manchester City, who I had here in the summer. I was speaking to Sven-Goran Eriksson about him last week. He's a good player but his position is behind the front two.

"It's not easy to accommodate a player like that in an English system. It's a lovely position to play. You are there with no defensive duties whatsoever. It's where everyone wants to play, but it is not always the way to go in the English game."

Portsmouth's Primus upbeat after knee op

Veteran Portsmouth defender Linvoy Primus has set his sights on a return to the first-team following his latest round of knee surgery.

Primus went under the knife of renowned US surgeon Dr Richard Steadman in Colorado in a bid to 'stimulate tissue and cartilage growth' and resolve a long-running knee problem.

The 34-year-old defender has been out of action since undergoing an initial knee operation in the summer.

Primus is currently in the last year of his contract at Fratton Park and needs to make 20 appearances this season in order to trigger an automatic clause which would guarantee him another 12 months with the South Coast club.

"The operation seemed to go very well," he told the club's official website.

"It has been such a frustrating time for me, especially bearing in mind how it went last season.

"But hopefully this latest treatment will prove successful and I can build myself up again and get back into contention for a first-team place."

Portsmouth boss: Cranie will bounce back

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp is confident Martin Cranie will make a successful recovery after breaking his leg on-loan at QPR.

He said: "The injury's a blow for Martin Cranie. He's been playing well at QPR.

"I feel sorry for him but I think he'll be able to make a speedy recovery. I think the boy will be fine."

Portsmouth's Taylor shrugs off transfer talk

Portsmouth fullback Matt Taylor has shrugged off speculation of a move away from Fratton Park.

Taylor came off the bench for only his seventh Premier League appearance of the season as Pompey drew 0-0 at home to Manchester City last Sunday.

The 25-year-old attacking left-back was deployed on the right flank by Harry Redknapp after John Utaka failed to emerge for the second half at Fratton Park.

Redknapp's instructions heightened speculation Taylor was growing frustrated at the south coast club, with Reading, Fulham and Sunderland all keen to recruit the versatile defender in the January transfer window.

But Taylor, who has played over 200 times for Pompey since a £400,000 move from Luton in summer 2002, is not grumbling about his situation.

Writing in his blog on the Setanta Sports website, Taylor said: "There were probably a few raised eyebrows when I played on the right, but I'm happy playing there - it's not strange to me and I'm happy playing either side.

"I feel I'm more than capable of holding my own against any Premier League side on the right and when I looked in the mirror that night, I was satisfied with what I had done.

"That's all I can do, train well, play well and then see who Harry selects."

Blackburn aim to trump Portsmouth for Cuevas

Blackburn Rovers could trump Portsmouth for off contract Paraguay striker Nelson Cuevas.

Cuevas is using Portsmouth's facilities as he regains fitness after knee surgery. Portsmouth are interested in signing him on a free. But he is also due to visit Blackburn.

Birmingham v Portsmouth

Managerless Birmingham have been quite organised and spirited throughout this season, but have often failed to convert performances into points. City will have to sustain their courageousness with or without a recognized manager if they wish to stay up.

Strikers Jerome and Forssell seem to fit together and midfielder Kapo is really turning out to be a lifeline for the Midlands club. The only problem I see with Birmingham is how they perform on the field without a manager.

Portsmouth have scored more goals away from home than any other team this season. Harry Redknapp has bough exactly the kind of attacking players needed to win games in the Premiership. Not only this, but he has moulded the team to play a very attacking game as well as staying tight at the back.

Pompey will finish in a good position at the end of the season, but another defender or a holding midfielder could help their cause, just in case of injuries or loss of form.

Every team with a vulnerable defence will fear Portsmouth this campaign, therefore Birmingham can be forgiven if they are unexpected to win this game. However, despite superb form from Pompey, I think Birmingham have the spirit to cause an upset and hold their opponents for a draw. Birmingham are able to frustrate teams at times and a laid back and crowded midfield style of play could get them a much needed point.

Prediction: Away Win
