Columbus Crew star Szetela hopes for second Everton chance
    tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Columbus Crew midfielder Danny Szetela would love a move to Everton. The USA Under-20 international rejected a move to Goodison Park as a 16-year-old.
Agent Shep Messing told BBC Sport: "Everton are probably his preferred destination, while Middlesbrough and Reading are also interested.
"But there's more interest from Serie A and we're closer to doing something in Italy, possibly in the next two weeks."
Lazio, Parma, Roma and Siena have all been in touch about a player who would be available for a small compensation fee of about £25,000 as his contract ends in December.

Sidwell keen to make Chelsea mark

Sidwell keen to make Chelsea mark
Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell says he is determined to use the side's injury plight to help prove his worth.
Sidwell, 24, came on as a substitute in the Community Shield loss to Manchester United and insists he is ready to step up to the plate if needed.
"Of course," he told BBC Sport. "Not just me but everyone that steps into other players' boots.
"The boss has to have faith in us to do a job and once called upon we've got to take that opportunity with both hands."

He added: "If you do that you never know where that can take you."
Former Arsenal trainee Sidwell joined on a free transfer from Reading during the summer after his fine form helped the Royals to eighth in their first season in the English top-flight.
Sidwell has now moved into a house with his family and says he has now settled in at the Stamford Bridge club and is not worried at taking the step up to Chelsea.
"No, not at all," he said. "That's the challenge that I've come here for.
"If I'm pushing people for their places that's obviously going to make them play better and that's going to make the team play better so we'll have a good chance of winning things this year.
"It'll be disappointing if we don't."
The camaraderie and team spirit that we have is top drawer

    Steve Sidwell

Chelsea had their Premier League crown taken off them by Manchester United last season and will start the new campaign against Birmingham on Sunday.
Manager Jose Mourinho has captain John Terry and striker Didier Drogba out, while several others are extremely doubtful.
Mourinho has brought in Sidwell, central defender Tal Ben Haim, left midfielder Florent Malouda and striker Claudio Pizarro to cope with the injuries which proved so costly last season.
And Sidwell, speaking at the launch of the Premier League Creating Chances community-based project launch, has been impressed by Mourinho in his short time at the club.
"The manager is fantastic," he said. "I can see now why there is a lot of hype about him being one of the best in business.
"From what I've seen of him just in this pre-season and the sessions he puts on is fantastic.
"The camaraderie and team spirit that we have is top drawer."

Tevez is eligible but boss Sir Alex Fergsuson will not play him - while Gary Neville and Louis Saha are out.
Reading will be without striker Leroy Lita, wingers Glen Little and Bobby Convey and defender Ibrahima Sonko.
Goalkeeper Marcus Hahnemann is expected to play despite not having fully recovered from a broken hand.

Man Utd (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Brown, Simpson, Bardsley, Ferdinand, Vidic, Silvestre, Evra, O'Shea, Carrick, Hargreaves, Eagles, Scholes, Fletcher, Giggs, Ronaldo, Rooney, Nani, Anderson, Tevez.
Reading (from): Hahnemann, Federici, Murty, De la Cruz, Ingimarsson, Bikey, Duberry, Shorey, Seol, Oster, Harper, Gunnarsson, Cisse, Hunt, Doyle, Kitson, Long.

Man Utd manager Sir Alex Ferguson:
"What you want to see in a team that has won the league is more authority, consistency and continuity in their game.

"We have noticed that in the training sessions in the Far East. There is a far more stable situation now.
"We expect the young players to improve a lot, not just Rooney and Ronaldo but Nani and Anderson as well, and we expect more from Darren Fletcher, John O'Shea, Patrice Evra and Nemanja Vidic.
"We also have the right people to call on in terms of experience, so overall I am happy with the mix."
    Reading skipper Graeme Murty:
"We showed last season we can give anyone a game.

"We know that with United's array of attacking talent we will need to be full out.
"We gave them a real fright in the FA Cup, coming from 3-0 down and I think if we'd have got an equaliser we'd have gone on and won the game.
"They will want to beat us. We want to get off to a good start as well."

    BIG-MATCH FACTS
Manchester United set out in pursuit of their 10th Premier League title, which would see them being crowned champions of England for the 17th time, just one behind Liverpool's all time record.

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien has sustained a knee ligament injury in the 3-2 English Premier League win over Birmingham City, and is a doubt for Thursday's (AEST) trip to Reading.

After a pre-season scarred by injuries to a host of key players, including captain John Terry, coach Jose Mourinho must have thought things were looking up as Didier Drogba made a quicker than expected return to fitness against Steve Bruce's side.

Instead, he could be facing a spell without his most versatile player.

Essien's value was underlined against Birmingham. He capped a dynamic display with the winner that ensured Chelsea extended its unbeaten run in league matches at Stamford Bridge to 64, beating Liverpool's previous top-flight record.

"It was something in the knee ligament," said Mourinho.

"He (Essien) was limping and the doctor was saying he was in pain.

"I had two midfielders on the bench so I made the change immediately. If you ask me if he is ready for Wednesday I don't know."
