Murty hails Reading gaffer Coppell

Reading captain Graham Murty has spoken of his great admiration for manager Steve Coppell.

The Scottish fullback told the Independent on Sunday: "Since coming to the club, he's taken us on to more than one level; not just in terms of being in the Premiership, but in terms of players' aspirations as well. There's no real household names, but he keeps on getting performances out of them."

Reading boss Coppell: I need to buy in January

Reading boss Steve Coppell admits he'll be active in the winter market.

He said: "Maybe there's more of a gap between the top and the bottom now. We're competing against teams who spent 40 million in the summer when there was a real investment surge.

"For logical reasons we decided not to jump on that wagon. But it's clear that we have to supplement the squad in January. I think that's become obvious since the start of the season and I very much hope we will do that."

He added: "You get comfortable. I like the squad of players we've got but we're not getting results. If I'm not seen to be doing something about it I'm not doing my job."

"I thought we did enough to get a draw. It was painful for us. We had a game plan as they have some good players and we looked more connected in this game than others."

Reading boss Steve Coppell:
"We contributed fully to the game and it was hard to concede a goal so late on in the match.

"We went a goal down but knew that we would get a chance to get back into the match and when we equalised felt we'd get at least a point.

"The ironic thing was that all the delightful football they play they got the winner with a long ball."

Reading boss Steve Coppell is wary of Liverpool striker Fernando Torres, whose hat-trick helped the Reds beat his side in the Carling Cup in September.

"The difference last time was a 25m centre forward," he said.

"If we are going to get something then we will have to be right at the top of our game.

"Torres is quality. Hopefully we will have learned from last time and if he is playing we will know what to do."
