La Liga Reflections: Real Madrid Making The Right Noises Saturday evening was one of those when everyone concerned with Real Madrid made just the right noise at the Santiago Bernabeu. A Real Madrid fan speaks...

Be it the players' attitutude on the pitch, the Bernabeu crowd's backing of the players, or Bernd Schuster's words after the game, it was all simply spot on!
The La Liga season got underway in perfect fashion for Los Merengues on Saturday, as they came from a goal down to secure a 2-1 win over cross-town rivals Atletico Madrid, and in the process gave new coach Bernd Schuster a triumphant start, and offered promises of a spectacular season for the reigning Spanish champions.
Prior to the start of the match, Madrid veteran Raul flaunted the club’s 30th league trophy in front of a sell out 80,000 crowd, to a standing ovation from the Bernabeu faithful.
The celebrations were short lived, however, as in the very first minute, unmarked Argentine forward Sergio Aguero nodded in a corner deflected by Ruud van Nistelrooy.
Less than 57 seconds had passed and the first goal of the match and the La Primera season had been scored, much to the woe of the current champions. Madrid however, stormed back in style, and the Merengue fans saw much of what they had witnessed towards the end of last season.
Club captain Raul took 15 minutes to put the Spanish champions on level with their city rivals. Although Robinho played an important part, it was Madrid defender Sergio Ramos’ cross that Raul headed past Atletico keeper Leo Franco, who remained rooted to the spot.
From then on, Madrid fans witnessed their side attacking with a sense of necessity, and the first half saw both sides continue to exhibit some superb end-to-end football, though it was Madrid who dominated. The crowd responded by getting behind the team out of raw joy and passion, and without a hint of the desperation that was seen last season. A 30th La Liga title has most definitely done a lot of good to everyone!
After six defeats in pre-season warm ups and friendlies, the pressure was still on for the Whites to secure a win in their maiden game of the season, and with eight new signings of which only three were playing, it was Dutchman Wesley Sneijder who created some of the best chances for his side.
The former Ajax player, dubbed Madrid's ‘new Beckham’, showed why he would be worth every bit of the reported 27 million euro the merengues paid, especially when he scored the winner after receiving a pass from midfielder Guti off a free kick. Over the last two games, he has shown that not only have Real Madrid found someone who can play quality 'box to box' football, but also deliver into the box with pin-point accuracy. And he is still improving!
With ten minutes to spare and the home side ahead, Madrid continued to display fierce attacking football, something which the fans had missed during Fabio Capello’s reign. Don Fabio, with all due respect (and he did engineer some sensational comebacks) has always shut shop in the final ten minutes if ahead. The Whites continued to threaten, and the fans responded in glee.
Star striker Ruud van Nistelrooy was denied, having a close range shot blocked by Atleti keeper Franco, and Guti fired a free kick against the woodwork. The home side secured the first three points of the season, and did so in style, and against a team that could well make it into the top four.
With the teams and the fans having done their bit, it was coach Bernd Schuster who finally chose to utter the right words, using the chance well to strike a note with their fans, and just ensure that nobody missed the way his boys approached the game - with a touch of liberation.
He also resisted the temptation to hit back at critics, and that will only do good. Those very critics, instead of feeling alienated by the success, will find it easier to embrace it. That will help when the going gets tough, as it will during the course of a season. Overall, you could say that was an evening when everything went perfectly for Los Merengues.

Real Madrid 2, Atletico Madrid 1: Beckham's boots filled by capable new boy Sneijder

David who? Real Madrid began the post-Beckham era with a thrilling 2-1 derby win over Atletico Madrid and it was the England man's replacement, Wesley Sneijder, who stole the show, scored the winner, and had Real President Ramon Calderon taking a thinly-disguised post-match swipe at Beckham.
"We haven't seen 30-metre passes like that at the Bernabeu for years" said Calderon praising the debut performance of Sneijder and doing something of an injustice to Beckham's four-year stint in Spain.
Sneijder, signed for around £17m pounds in the summer, has taken the No 23 shirt at the Bernabeu and assumed the mantle of Real's new pass-master, and yesterday he won over his new fans by giving them victory over their local rivals.
The former Ajax man had impressed throughout his debut and when Real won a free-kick on the edge of Atletico's penalty area with 10 minutes left on the clock Guti, who had just hit the bar with a set-piece, rolled it to the Dutchman and his precise shot beat Leo Franco in the visitors' goal.
Real Madrid celebrated winning the title last season by sacking manager Fabio Capello and spending £80m on eight new players. The drastic overhaul looked to have backfired with a dismal pre-season and they were behind in this game inside the first minute when Sergio Aguero stole in at the back post to head in Mariano Pernia's corner.
But Real responded well and on the quarter-hour they were level when a rejuvenated Raul headed in Sergio Ramos' cross. The club captain later picked up his first booking in almost three years, for not retreating at a free-kick, but spoiling his extraordinary disciplinary record (booked just 20 times in 14 seasons) was not enough to wipe the smile off his face as Sneijder scored in the 79th minute to give Real a winning start to the season

Sampdoria signing Cassano: I won't change

New Sampdoria striker Antonio Cassano insists he won't tone down his fiery nature.
The on-loan Real Madrid forward said: "It is not an issue of counting to 10, 100 or 1,000. This is my personality. I would have to file down certain aspects of it, but I cannot change overnight.
"If I make a mistake, then I make a mistake. That is all. Why should I apologise and to who? Recognising my errors does not mean saying sorry.
"The media are always happy with me, to begin with. Then when they discover what I'm like they start to attack me," he told Sky Italia television.
"I don't really care, though. I am always treated with extremes, they build me up and knock me down in an instant. I play well for one game and am back to being a genius, if I get one match wrong I am the crazy guy who doesn't want to train. There is never grey with me, it is either black or white."
He added: "It is great to be back in Italy and I got such a warm welcome from the Sampdoria fans. There were so many people, I found it quite moving.
"My mother is extremely happy to be in Italy. Making her and the people close to me - especially my cousins - content is very important. If they aren't happy, then I can't be either."

    Milan: We nearly had Henry
    Tuesday 28 August, 2007

Milan Vice-President Adriano Galliani has revealed that the Rossoneri came close to capturing Barcelona’s Thierry Henry at the start of the summer.

The European champions were linked with a host of top strikers including Andriy Shevchenko and Samuel Eto’o in pre-season, but settled for Brazilian starlet Alexandre Pato from Internacional.

However, Galliani has now explained just how close the Diavolo came to signing French ace Henry from Arsenal.

“Thierry Henry could have come to Milan,” he told Sky Sports Italia. “ We were ready to match the figure Barcelona paid Arsenal and Henry would have happily come here, but Barca added 50 per cent to his wages.

“It was clearly impossible to lure Ronaldinho in this transfer window,” he continued. “Our business is done for now, but we will have to see in future.

“I still believe that Barca may sell him at some stage. If they do put him up for sale we will try, but we don’t want to risk Real Madrid coming in for Kaka.”

Despite regular Press reports that Milan representatives were in negotiations with the Blaugrana regarding Ronaldinho, the Spainsh runners-up’s President Joan Laporta insists that Eto’o was the main subject of discussions.

“We never received an official offer from Milan for Ronaldinho,” he mainained on Radio Catalunya. “Eto’o is the player we had most offers for and the Rossoneri were very keen on him.”

Kaka To Sign New Milan Contract
Real Madrid's dreams of luring Kaka away from AC Milan in the near future have been hit by the news that contract renewal talks are underway.

The Brazilian megastar made the revelation himself, shortly after he was yet again instrumental for side during their impressive 3-0 win to begin the Serie A season.

"We are discussing about my renewal: neither I nor Milan are in a rush," announced the 25-year-old, who has been an enormous hit with the Milan fans since arriving from Sao Paolo in 2203.

Since the time I arrived, five years ago, for me it seems a century," he added. "I have changed everything about me, training, country, soccer, diet, tactics.

"And in Milan I have known people like Maldini and Costacurta that have passed the Milan mentality to me."

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani also spoke of Kaka's situation at the San Siro, although in more general terms.

"Kaka has never has been up for sale," he insisted. "I hope this is the end of it and the story does not recommence next year."

Kaka scored twice during the season opener, and Rossoneri boss Carlo Ancelotti sees no reason why their fantasista could not emulate his Champions League scoring-leader feat in the Serie A.

"I was thinking after the game that it wouldn't surprise me one bit if he finished as 'capocannoniere'", said Ancelotti. "He has a lot of quality to be able to achieve the aims he wants."

AC Milan hint giving Chelsea free Ronaldinho run

AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has hinted they'll allow Chelsea a clear run at Ronaldinho should Barcelona indicate they're ready to sell this week.
He said: "While for the summer market there are only three days left, for us, the window is not shut.
"I believe that Barcelona will hold onto him (Ronaldinho).
"Sure, if they put him up for sale we will try for him. But we cannot go forward with his history otherwise it'll turn into something similar to Real Madrid and Kaka."

All roads lead to AS Roma as Barcelona feel the strain

Serie A and La Liga kicked off with a bullish performance from Francesco Totti and Co and a less than convincing showing from Thierry Henry's new employers. Still, it's only round one.
'Ludovic Guily's transfer to Roma will go down as the best signing of the close season'
I watched a fair amount of football this weekend - roughly 12-16 hours worth of matches. Given the size of my social circumference, it was no easy task to simply block everything out and focus on the football. But with the Italian and Spanish leagues revving up this weekend I wouldn't have been able to focus had someone convinced me a happening was taking place more worthy of my attention.

And after the final whistle blew I have to admit that AS Roma were the most exciting side that took the pitch. The two goals they scored were magnificent. Defender Philippe Mexes knocked in the first off an unstoppable cross and Alberto Aquilani submitted an early contender for Goal of the Year with his 27th-minute cracker. More than that, the entire side were dangerous, inventive and sharper than anyone else I watched. And that includes the English clubs that have been going for a few matches now.

I remarked earlier this summer that Ludovic Guily's transfer to Roma would go down as the best signing of the close season. If he continues to run his ass off the way he did tonight I will be more than justified in making such a statement. I mean, Thierry Henry and a Barcelona side that could not find the back of the net against Racing Santander!

Captain Francesco Totti had a mediocre night and that may be generous. But he still managed to bring the look of fear in the Palermo keeper's eyes whenever he stood over a free kick, and forced him into a fantastic save on a longer-range attempt and passed the ball around nicely.

I was most impressed with Mirko Vucinic. A few more matches and this guy will be knocking in the goals at a ridiculous rate. I could dedicate a paragraph to the entire starting line-up if I wanted. Rodrigo Taddei - someone I've never been high on in the past - was trouble all night for Palermo and Daniele De Rossi was his usual brilliant self. Roma keeper Doni was forced into some very difficult saves and to be fair did not look the strongest link in the Roma chain at times. Luckily he has the likes of Mexes and Christian Panucci around him.

Keep in mind that Roma were without Juan, Alessandro Mancini and Simone Perrotta. Once those three are available I think the rest of Italy will be seriously worried. Juventus may have returned to a flying five-goal start and AC Milan knocked in three of their own while keeping a clean sheet. But defending champions Inter settled for a 1-1 draw and were less than impressive against Udinese.

It was just one match and, yes, I am well aware of that. Inter could be the team of the weekend for the next eight weeks for all I know. Or Barca could get their act together and win out! You never know with football. But I have to comment that Liverpool still look like the best side in England. Manchester United were just bland against Spurs. They looked like nothing more than a tough home side and were fortunate Nani produced a wonder strike or else they would be in crisis mode.

And Chelsea should be thanking David James for their three points against Portsmouth. Real Madrid were in the Madrid derby so everything gets thrown out the window in that instance.

Based on the weekend results, the side I know I'll be waiting to see again is Roma. I don't believe for a second Inter are going to run away with this title again and Roma just have the spoiler look about them.

Inter Milan swoop for Guimaraes’ Pele

Portugal U20 starlet signs 4-year deal with Italian giants

Vitoria Guimaraes midfielder, Pele, has signed for Italian giants, Inter Milan on a four-year contract.

The 19-year-old, whose real name is Vitor Hugo Gomes Passos, could not contain his delight at securing the move to Luis Figo’s club.

“Inter is a club that is known worldwide. I can’t even dream. It’s a great honour for me and even more so because I’m going to meet Luis Figo. But I will never forget Vitoria,” said Pele.

The Portuguese club will receive two million euros for the Portuguese U20 starlet, who thus becomes Guimaraes’ second highest transfer after Fernando Meira’s 4m euro transfer to Benfica back in 2000.

Inter coach Roberto Mancini personally saw to it that the Italians purchased the player after being impressed with the youngster’s displays during the recent U20 World Cup held in Canada.

“Let’s see if he gets to be like the real one (Pele),” joked the Italian when asked to comment on the capture.

Barcelona Gearing Up For Must-Win Inter Clash
What looked set to be a celebration of a game against Inter Milan has now become a massive test for Barcelona.
Barcelona's 0-0 draw against Racing Santander in their La Liga opener has sent the Catalan press wild. The media seem to have carried on from where they left off following those two disastrous and late home draws against Real Betis and Espanyol towards the end of last season.
The mood in the camp looked fairly relaxed during training this morning, but there is no doubting the fact that the Joan Gamper Trophy clash against Inter Milan tomorrow is now a must win game, particularly in front of home fans disconsolate over the display against Racing.
Inter themselves come in with a point to prove after dropping points to Udinese, but thankfully for them, there is no panic back home. They will be able to approach this game much more calmly.
An interesting anecdote could be the possible presence of Luis Figo, who has never been welcomed at the Camp Nou since forcing a move to Real Madrid, now over seven years ago.
The Portuguese veteran is carrying a slight injury, and isunlikely to feature at the moment. The suggestions are that he is not too keen on featuring either. It might just turn out to be best for everyone, as it is something that can turn a carnival atmosphere inside the Camp Nou into a much more serious one.
Coming back to Barcelona, the message from the fans and the media is clear: they do not want to see a friendly stroll, but a fighting performance that inspires belief.

CL Qualifier Preview: FC Copenhagen - SL Benfica

CL Qualifier Preview: FC Copenhagen - SL Benfica
What: Champions League Third Qualifying Round (Second Leg)

Who: FC København (4th Danish Superliga, 12 pts) v SL Benfica (7th Bwin Liga, 2 pts)

When: Wednesday, 29th August, Kick-off: 2045 local (Copenhagen)

    Where: Parken Stadium, Copenhagen, Denmark

    Background
It’s the second leg of the third round tie and the second season in a row that the Portuguese and Danish sides clash in the Champions League, this time a place in the Group Phase at stake.
The first leg ended with a slight edge for the Portuguese Águias (Eagles) Benfica thanks to a Rui Costa brace that clawed in a win.
Danish Løverne (Lions) FC København did cause the feathers to fly, however, as Canadian midfielder Atiba Hutchinson levelled things off after the first Rui Costa strike.
The slim advantage means that the second leg is bound to be fertile ground for the Danes to plant the seeds of hope that they can make it through to the group stage instead of the UEFA Cup.
That’s assuming they are capable of drawing Benfica blood at the Parken: a repeat of last year’s goalless draw at the same venue simply won’t be enough.
With the all-important Hutchinson strike from the da Luz first leg the away goal rule will be key to a potential classification for the Champions League proper.
A 1-0 will see the hosts through although, conversely a 0-1 will see Benfica take the cake and FC Copenhagen get the booby prize: a place in the Champions League's less lucrative little brother.
The stadium is expected to be packed for tomorrow’s decider with home fans eager to egg their team on and Portuguese visitors and ex-pats wanting to voice their support too.
The Løvernes Hule (Lions' Den) holds over 42,000 spectators but, for security reasons, only 40,000 tickets are expected to be on sale according to recent reports.
Of these between 2,000 and 3,000 of the seats are expected to be occupied by Benfica supporters, a mix of those making the trip from Portugal and those working in Copenhagen.
    First Leg Line-Ups
BENFICA (2): Quim; David Luiz, Luisão (Adu 37), Leo, Luis Filipe; Petit, Rui Costa, Katsouranis, Assis (Nuno Gomes 74); Cardozo, Bergessio (Fabio Coentrão 46)
FC COPENHAGEN (1): Christiansen; Silberbauer, Gravgaard, Hangeland, Jensen; Norregaard (Sionko 89), Kvist, Wurtz, Hutchinson, Gronkjaer; Allbäck (Nordstrand 78)
    Team News
    FC COPENHAGEN
Ex-Benfica and FC Copenhagen idol Manniche (not to be confused with Maniche the 29 year-old Atlético de Madrid and Portugal midfielder who was named after him) sees the fixture as a close-run thing, but the hosts having a good chance.
Having played for Benfica from 1983 to 1987 and FC København from 1992 to 1994 before a short pre-retirement stint as assistant manager-cum-player in 1996, Copenhagen-born Manniche is in a good position to speak about both sides.
“It’s best for us to face Benfica this time around, when things aren’t going so well for them, than last year when they were doing better in comparison”, he explained from the standpoint of his current employers.
Nevertheless the man who is considered a Benfica living legend did stress that “Benfica do have a great retrospective in Europe and for that reason could be considered favourites”, he explained to the Portuguese press.
“We don’t have a Rui Costa or a Nuno Gomes but we do have a good team”, he added, noting that Solbakken’s men “could make the difference with aerial attacks if Luisão doesn’t play.”
Manniche pointed out that Benfica "were lucky in many ways to get the win at da Luz and I really think we have an excellent chance of going through if we can avoid letting any goals in and take advantage of any nerves on the Benfica side."
Goalkeeper Christiansen will be the focus of attention as he’s charged with the complicated mission of keeping a clean sheet at all costs. After suffering twice from Rui Costa’s refined nose for goal in the first leg, he knows where the danger is.
“Benfica has many good players but Rui Costa is capable of both creating and ending a move at any time during a match”, the keeper said, praising the man whose first leg brace resulted in victory for the Portuguese giants.
“They are a good side with a solid defence, but I have faith in our capabilities and am sure that we can make it through their back four and score.” In front he can count on being shielded by Texas-born Norwegian number 5 Brede Hangeland.
The towering back has been linked with a move to the EPL yet again, Bolton and Newcastle apparently eager to sign him, but the player has denied that he has anything in mind except doing the best for The Lions – including beating Benfica.
The defence is set to be tested but has held fast in the past two matches that FC Copenhagen have played in the Danish SAS League. The opponents were two of the other top clubs in Denmark: FC Midtjylland and OB and both matches ended in 0-0 stalemates with Jesper Christiansen on good form.
Coach Ståle Solbakken told FC Copenhagen’s official website that his game-plan is ready – even a plan B and C if A doesn’t work out, and the tactician sees the home support as being a potentially decisive factor whatever the on-pitch tactics.
Last year’s face-off saw the legs reversed and Benfica were able to capitalise on their home support, but now the ball’s firmly in the Danish court and it shouldn’t be forgotten that both Manchester United and Celtic were downed at the Parken.
Jesper Gronkjaer will sit the decider out via suspension and the forward’s absence could weaken the Lions’ attack which will probably have to rely on the unproductive pairing of Allbäck and Nordstrand: the latter’s aim conspicuously off of late.
There is a possibility that Brazilian number 7 Aílton Almeida may get a starting nod as he did against Odense BK, coming off for Nordstrand in the 64th minute, but Solbakken is refusing to name names just yet. The last line up was:
FC COPENHAGEN (4-4-2): Christiansen; Kvist, Gravgaard (Captain), Hangeland, Jensen; Silberbauer, Norregaard, Würtz (Sionko) and Hutchinson; Gronkjaer and Almeida (Nordstrand)

    SL BENFICA
The last two weeks have been tumultuous at the Águias, Fernando Santos being sacked after a lacklustre Bwin Liga debut. The 1-1 draw against modest minnows Leixões was the final nail in the tactician’s coffin.
Ex-Spain Coach José Antonio Camacho has been brought in to try to stop the rot before Benfica end yet another season without silverware, although the Spaniard also lucked out in his home debut this weekend with a goalless draw against Vitoria de Guimarães.
Given what he’s seen, after landing in rainy Copenhagen Camacho has little doubt that Wednesday’s match will be a watershed for Benfica. “We have the obligation to score here because the result [from the first leg] is too narrow a margin.”
“In the BWin league there’s room for error and correction but that doesn’t exist in the Champions League, especially in knockout rounds”, he warned. “The Danish have a certain style and although we drew here last year both teams are very different.”
He added that the injury that is said to be sidelining Katsouranis wasn’t a big worry and that he’s still not certain if a Luisão who’s getting back to match fitness after a recent spell in dry dock will play, but did add that “I won’t be making many changes.”
The three recent South American signings (Uruguayans Cristian Rodríguez and Maxi Pereira and Brazilian Edcarlos) won’t be present in Camacho’s squad for the clash and are expected to stay in Portugal to tie up the loose ends on their respective contracts.
Recent Argentine signing Angel Di María has shrugged off the injury hassles he picked up in the pre-Camacho pre-season and is ready to muck in – if given a chance. “I’m ready and willing and will do whatever the Coach wants to help Benfica.”
Camacho has changed his list from the weekend game against Guimarães by including Luisão, Di María and Dabao and cutting Andrés Díaz:
    Goalkeepers: Quim and Butt
Defenders: Luís Filipe, Nélson, Luisão, Miguel Vítor, Léo and Miguelito
Midfielders: Katsouranis, Petit, Rui Costa, Nuno Assis, Freddy Adu, Romeu Ribeiro and Fábio Coentrão
Forwards: Cardozo, Bergessio, Nuno Gomes, Di María and Dabao.
It remains to be seen how Camacho will play it as the tactician is holding his cards close to his chest, but the smart money will be on a counter-attacking game that aims to use speed to unravel the Danish defence and bring the bacon home for Benfica.
The most recent line-up – and the only one used by Camacho so far – is shown below but both Katsouranis and Luisão are borderline. The only training session is scheduled for 19:00 tonight and should clarify both players' states as well as Camacho's ideas.
BENFICA (4-4-2): Quim, Nelson, Katsouranis, Miguel Vítor and Léo; Petit, Rui Costa, Fábio Coentrão (Luís Filipe, 72), Nuno Assis (Romeu Ribeiro, 70), Nuno Gomes and Cardozo (Bergessio, 80).

Xavi: We Did Not Want To Play Inter

FC Barcelona's players have revealed that they did not want to play against Inter on Wednesday evening after hearing about the death of Sevilla's Antonio Puerta.

Club captain Xavi Hernández's first reaction was to cancel the Trofeo Gamper game against the Italian champions in Camp Nou, but agreed that it had to go ahead.

Puerta passed away on Tuesday after spending three days on life support following a series of heart attacks and Real Madrid cancelled their encounter against Sporting Lisbon the following day.

"At first the squad wanted the game to be postponed in order to show our respects to the Puerta, although after talking to the directors we agreed that the best homage was to play for him," Xavi said.

"It was a good way for us to send a message of support and our concolences. Before that none of the players had really fancied playing at all."

Barça had planned to use the Inter encounter to pay homage to their legendary former vice-president, Nicolau Casaus, who died earlier this summer and wanted to continue to do that.

In order to pay tribute to Puerta, the Catalan club cancelled all pre-match festivities and agreed to donate ten per cent of all proceeds to research into cardiovascular illnesses.

The Barça team then took to the pitch all wearing Sevilla shirts, with the the name Puerta and his number 16 on the back, as well as carrying a picture of the Sevilla star above the words 'We are playing for you'.

"It was a difficult situation," reflected Thiago Motta. "If it had been only down to us we would not have played.

"But we spoke about with other people and decided that we would all wear the shirts in order to pay our own personal homage to him."

Xavi was shocked by the news of Puerta's passing, but believes that medical checks at football clubs are thorough and that sometimes nothing can be done to prevent incidents like this.

"They cannot always be foreseen," he said. "There are cases in which nothing can be done.

"Doctors check out all areas of our bodies and run loads of tests and the heart is always the most important thing."

Barça defeated Inter 5-0 to win the Trofeo Gamper, thanks to goals from Ronaldinho, Giovani Dos Santos, Touré Yaya, Andrés Iniesta and Thiago Motta.

    Everton welcome back Gravesen

Everton boss Dave Moyes has welcomed Thomas Gravesen back to Goodison Park on-loan from Celtic.

The 31-year-old has been signed on a year-long loan from Celtic and is clearly the midfield re-enforcement manager David Moyes wanted after his attempts to sign Manuel Fernandes from Benfica collapsed at the weekend.

Gravesen has been out of favour at Celtic for some time and the subject of transfer speculation involving Sheffield United and Fulham this summer.

The Denmark international first moved to Everton from Hamburg for £2.5million but with his contract due to expire in the summer of 2005, Everton sold the player to Real Madrid for £2.5million in the January of that year.

But now he is back on Merseyside, where he became a cult figure among Toffees fans.

He said: "I am really looking forward to coming back to Everton, it is a chance to play top-flight football in the Premier League again."

Gravesen moved to Celtic in 2006, where he has had a chequered time, and he has not figured in any of their matches this season.

Everton borrow back Gravesen but run out of time with Appiah

David Moyes illustrated the difficulty of acquiring fresh talent under a looming transfer deadline last night when, four days after the collapse of a £12m move for Manuel Fernandes, the Everton manager signed Thomas Gravesen on loan to return to Goodison Park from Celtic.
Gravesen, a popular figure among Everton supporters prior to his £2.5m departure to Real Madrid in 2005 but now surplus to requirements at the Scottish champions, arrived on Merseyside for a medical last night and the season-long loan deal was later confirmed with some relief before the close of the transfer window. The 31-year-old's arrival may not complete the end of Moyes' business this summer, with the Everton manager seeking another midfielder ahead of the midnight deadline, although his signature demonstrates the dilemma that has faced his former club since Fernandes reneged on a record transfer and signed for Valencia on Monday.

    Gravesen leaves Celtic for Everton

    Gravesen leaves Celtic for Everton

    August 31, 2007

Celtic midfielder Thomas Gravesen has joined former club Everton on a season-long loan.

Gravesen was frozen out of the first-team picture at Parkhead following the impact of summer additions Scott Brown and Massimo Donati.

Moves to Sheffield United, Fulham and Toulouse were mooted for the 31-year-old, who joined Celtic in a £2m deal from Real Madrid 12 months ago.

But Everton manager David Moyes intervened after Portuguese youngster Manuel Fernandes opted to join Valencia.

Gravesen spent four and a half years at Goodison Park before leaving for Madrid in January 2005.

Milan Come Back To Win Super Cup

Milan Come Back To Win Super Cup
    Milan 3-1 Sevilla

In a match dominated by memories of Antonio Puerta, Milan came from a goal down to beat Sevilla and win the European Super Cup.Renato put Sevilla ahead in the 14th minute, but Pippo Inzaghi pulled things back after the break with a trade-mark poaching header. Jankulovski put Milan in the lead with a scorching volley, before Kaka settled it with one for himself.
Sevilla may have been unable to win the trophy in honour of their fallen team-mate, but the evening was a fitting tribute to Puerta as both teams paid homage to the 22-year-old who passed away on Tuesday.

Banners, flags and placards paying tribute to Puerta covered the Sevilla end of the stadium, while both teams donned the player's name below the numbers on their shirts throughout the game.

There was a touching moment at half-time from the Milan supporters as a group walked along the running track before displaying a banner paying their own homage to the Sevilla number 16 in front of the Spanish clubs' fans.

On the pitch, the speed and intensity of the game was also a fitting way to remember Puerta as both sides went about the game with a desire to win.

Daniel Alves started the game and put an end to rumours and reports that he would leave Sevilla for Real Madrid.

The UEFA Cup holders enjoyed the brighter opening as Renato went close with a shot after he latched onto a rebound, before Alves turned the ball onto his own post at the other end as he prevented Kaká from shooting.

In minute 14 the deadlock was broken when Renato met a corner at the far post and his downward header beat Dida and crept inside the near post.

The Sevilla players all gathered together and pointed to the heavens as one, while none of the coaching staff or substitutes celebrated the goal.

Inzaghi looked to help draw his team level when taking a dramatic dive in the area before Sevilla casused panic in the Milan defence.

Frédéric Kanouté raced onto a wayward pass from Gennaro Gattuso and, after rounding Dida, pull the ball back only for Renato to take a touch before shooting.

His effort was prevented from going in by Alessandro Nesta and Duda blazed over as he ran onto the loose ball.

Calrence Seedorf had the Italians' clearest chance of the half when he flung himself at a corner, but his header flew over Andrés Palop's goal.

Before the break Inzaghi warmed the Sevilla keeper's gloves, Kanouté shot over from 20 yards out and Milan had a goal ruled out for offside.

The second half saw Milan tighten things up as the long week began to finally take its toll on the Sevilla players.

An equaliser arrived ten minutes after the restart when Gattuso lifted a cross over from the right and Inzaghi was unmarked in the centre of the goal to nod home from close range.

Just seven minutes later Sevilla fell behind for the first time, but it was to a tremendous striker as Andrea Pirlo's long pass picked out Marek Jankulovski on the left of the area and he sent an incredible volley back into the far corner of the goal.

The Spanish side tried to make a comeback of their own, but Milan's defence remained strong as Alves shot overn and Seydou Keita headed over.

A clumsy challenge ended the game as a contest Kaká edged his way down the right of the area only to be felled by Ivica Dragutinovic.

The Brazilian saw his resulting penalty kick kept out by Palop's face, but the ball dropped kindly and Kaká was able to head the ball into an empty net.

In a powerful gesture, Kaká untucked his shirt and pointed to Puerta's name in his own personal homage, while Seedorf too paid his respects by displaying the name of the former Sevilla player when leaving the field to be substituted.

Aleksandr Kerzhakov created a fine chance to reduce the deficit in the closing moments as he headed the ball back across goal, but Enzo Maresca arrived just too late and steered his effort against the outside of the post.

Milan and Sevilla meet in Monaco

    e-mailPrint

The tragic death of Sevilla FC midfielder Antonio Puerta on Tuesday has left the European football family in mourning. The meeting of AC Milan and Sevilla for the UEFA Super Cup will feature a special UEFA tribute to a 22-year-old described by one of the many to have voiced their grief this week as a "magnificent player, an even better person".
    • The 2007 UEFA Super Cup will be the first time the teams have met in UEFA competition.
    • Milan have won the UEFA Super Cup a record four times, most recently as European champions in 2003, and are also the only club to complete back-to-back victories when winning in 1989 and 1990. They will be up against a Sevilla side aiming to emulate that achievement after brushing aside the might of FC Barcelona a year ago with a 3-0 victory.
    • Milan enter the 32nd edition of the UEFA Super Cup, which has been an official UEFA club competition since 1973, as Europe's premier team after a 2-1 victory against Liverpool FC in the UEFA Champions League final in Athens on 23 May. Sevilla participate as UEFA Cup holders having triumphed 3-1 on penalties against RCD Espanyol after a 2-2 draw in Glasgow a week before.
    • Milan's 1-0 defeat of FC Porto in the 2003 UEFA Super Cup, thanks to Andriy Shevchenko's early headed winner, was their first success since the competition moved to one-off finals at the Stade Louis II in 1998. It was the UEFA Champions League winners' only previous visit to the venue.
    • The Milan lineup on 29 August 2003 was: Dida, Šimić, Maldini, Nesta, Pancaro, Rui Costa (Cafu 85), Gattuso, Pirlo, Seedorf (Ambrosini 71), Shevchenko (Rivaldo 76), Inzaghi. Carlo Ancelotti was the coach.
    • Sevilla have also played in the Principality on one previous occasion. Last year they arrived as UEFA Cup holders to take on the UEFA Champions League winners Barça. Sevilla became the third different Spanish team to win the trophy thanks to first-half goals from Renato and Frédéric Kanouté, together with a late penalty from substitute Enzo Maresca. It was the third time teams from the same country had contested the UEFA Super Cup.
    • The Sevilla lineup on 25 August 2006 was: Palop, Daniel Alves, Javi Navarro, Escudé, Castedo, Adriano (Puerta 81), Poulsen, Renato, Navas (Maresca 75), Luis Fabiano (Martí 46), Kanouté.
    • Milan's first UEFA Super Cup success also came at the expense of Spanish opposition. In 1989, Milan drew 1-1 at Barcelona, thanks to a Marco van Basten penalty, before clinching the trophy with a 1-0 home win secured by Alberigo Evani. Maldini played in both legs.
    • In 1990, they again drew 1-1 away, this time at Italian rivals UC Sampdoria with Evani once more on target in a side boasting Maldini and Ancelotti. In the second leg Ancelotti again figured as Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard struck for a 2-0 home victory in the first final featuring teams from the same country.
    • Those back-to-back wins for Milan in 1989 and 1990 mark the only time a club has successfully defended the UEFA Super Cup. Liverpool and Nottingham Forest FC both had the opportunity but after wins in 1977 and 1979 respectively, each lost the following year.
    • Aside from their 1989, 1990 and 2003 successes, Milan also won the 1994 edition, actually played in February 1995, with a 2-0 aggregate victory against Arsenal FC. Both goals came in the second leg at San Siro from Zvonimir Boban and Daniele Massaro after a goalless draw at Highbury. Maldini featured in the first leg.
    • Milan lost the first official UEFA Super Cup in January 1973, their only other appearance in the competition. After a 1-0 win at home against AFC Ajax, they went down 6-0 in Amsterdam. This remains the club's heaviest defeat in UEFA club competition.
    • Aside from that UEFA Super Cup duel with Barcelona, Milan have twice met Spanish opposition in the final of the European Champion Clubs' Cup. In 1957/58, Milan lost 3-2 to Real Madrid CF in Brussels. More recently, the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League final in Athens saw the Rossoneri run out 4-0 winners against Barcelona.
    • In total Milan have played 38 individual UEFA club competition games against Spanish opposition, winning 15, drawing seven and losing 16. They have not won in their last three fixtures, namely a 1-0 loss and a 0-0 draw in the 2005/06 UEFA Champions League semi-finals against Barcelona and a 2-1 group-stage defeat at Camp Nou in the previous campaign.
    • Sevilla have only met Italian opposition once in UEFA club competition, a two-legged tie against Parma FC in the 2004/05 UEFA Cup Round of 16. A goalless draw at home was followed by 1-0 defeat in Italy.
    • Although neither club has played against AS Monaco FC at the Stade Louis II, Milan did meet the Ligue 1 club in the 1993/94 UEFA Champions League semi-finals. Uniquely for that season, the tie was decided by a one-off match at San Siro with Milan running out 3-0 winners.
    • Italy are the most successful nation in the UEFA Super Cup, having won it on eight occasions. Spain are third with six triumphs, one behind England.
    • Sevilla boast two Italian players who will know all about facing Milan. Former Juventus midfielder Enzo Maresca and 30-year-old goalkeeper Morgan De Sanctis, a summer recruit from Udinese Calcio, both have plenty of Serie A experience.
    • Milan have no Spanish players in their squad although Clarence Seedorf, Ronaldo and Emerson all previously represented Real Madrid.

    Everton fail to bag Riquelme

    01/09/2007

Everton failed in a last-ditch bid to sign Argentine World Cup star Juan Roman Riquelme.
David Moyes was ready to land him for £5million from Villarreal and even organised a work permit, but the player opted to stay in Spain and join Atletico Madrid.

    Bolton 1-2 Everton

    Bolton 1-2 Everton

Joleon Lescott's last-gasp header gave Everton victory after record buy Yakubu marked his debut with a goal.

The £11.25m striker rounded off a brilliant counter-attack by turning in Andrew Johnson's pass after 11 minutes.
Mikel Alonso hit the bar with a rising drive before Nicolas Anelka deservedly drew Bolton level with a powerful volley after 55 minutes.
Everton, inspired by substitute Thomas Gravesen, snatched the points when Lescott headed home the Dane's corner.
Boss David Moyes gave first Premier League starts to Everton's summer signings Phil Jagielka and Steven Pienaar, with Gravesen on the bench.
And the tiny South African was involved in the sweeping move that saw Everton go ahead after 11 minutes.
Pienaar found Johnson, who sped past Gerald Cid before finding Yakubu perfectly at the far post, who swept home a simple finish.
Bolton responded with predictable defiance, with El-Hadji Diouf posing problems to the Everton defence on both flanks.
Alonso produced a range of shooting that bore comparison with his more illustrious brother Xabi, and was desperately unlucky not to draw Bolton level.
He produced a magnificent save from Tim Howard with a rising drive, then an even better effort rebounded to safety off the bar six minutes before the interval.
Bolton were forced into a change at half-time, Andy O'Brien replacing the injured Cid.
Anelka was also a threatening figure, and he gave Bolton a deserved equaliser after 55 minutes.
Diouf's cross was only half-cleared, and Anelka thumped a rising volley past Howard.
Anelka then set up Kevin Nolan at the far post, but he wastefully side-footed wide when he looked certain to score.
Everton were very much on the back foot, so boss Moyes threw Gravesen into the fray in place of Carsley.
Alonso was shooting at every opportunity, forcing Howard to save low down with another powerful effort.
Gravesen's arrival gave Everton a measure of control, and Pienaar was narrowly off target from 10 yards.
The Dane then released Johnson, but Bolton keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen made a vital block.
Abdoulaye Meite tested Howard with a header from a corner as both sides pushed for the winner.
Gravesen then brilliantly created an opening by sending in Mikel Arteta, but substitute Leon Osman shot high over the bar.
And he was involved again as Everton took the lead in dramatic fashion with 90 seconds left.
Gravesen's corner was met at the far post by Lescott, who headed home powerfully.
The Dane celebrated wildly with Everton's fans at the final whistle as they celebrated a dramatic late winner.

    Bolton manager Sammy Lee:
"I've told the players that if they keep that level of commitment we will turn this around.
"There have been a lot of malignant rumours about the commitment and the dressing room at this club, but anyone who saw that performance will see for themselves that it's not true.
"It was very disappointing to concede a late goal from a set-piece, because we pride ourselves on that. We want to get a clean sheet mentality here, but we haven't got it yet, but I am confident we will starting getting the results we deserve soon."

    Everton manager David Moyes:
"Thomas Gravesen made a massive difference to us when he came on.
"He brought a calmness to us and made us play better. He's lacking a bit of fitness but he made some killer passes that helped us win the game.
"It was great for Yakubu to get off the mark, but huge credit must go to Andy Johnson - that was a real strike partnership goal."

Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Hunt (Davies 80), Meite, Cid (Andrew O'Brien 46), Samuel, Speed, Nolan, Alonso, McCann (Wilhelmsson 56), Diouf, Anelka.
Subs Not Used: Al Habsi, Braaten.

    Booked: Hunt.
    Goals: Anelka 55.
Everton: Howard, Jagielka, Yobo, Lescott, Baines, Arteta, Neville, Carsley (Gravesen 61), Pienaar (Osman 70), Yakubu (Anichebe 84), Johnson.
    Subs Not Used: Wessels, McFadden.

    Booked: Baines, Lescott, Gravesen.
    Goals: Yakubu 11, Lescott 90.

Lescott winner grabs points for Everton

Lescott winner grabs points for Everton
    01/09/2007 - 17:11:57

    Bolton 1 Everton 2

Joleon Lescott grabbed a late winner to give Everton all three points at the Reebok Stadium.

The Everton centre-back scored his second goal in five Premier League appearances this season in the 89th minute just when Bolton appeared on course for a deserved point.

Nicolas Anelka, who signed a new four-year contract with Bolton this week, had volleyed home a 55th-minute equaliser as just reward for the home side’s domination up to that point.

That cancelled out Ayegbeni Yakubu’s 11th-minute opener as the striker made a perfect start to his Everton career following his £11.25m move from Middlesbrough on Wednesday.

It is now four defeats in five games for Bolton boss Sammy Lee, while Everton are hot on the heels of Merseyside rivals Liverpool at the top of the table.

Despite Bolton controlling the opening 10 minutes, they were soon caught on the counter, and in clinical fashion.

Breaking away down the right-hand side, the ball fell to Andy Johnson who first rode a sliding challenge from Gerald Cid before driving into the penalty area.

With Bolton’s defence backtracking, the sidefoot pass to Yakubu to Johnson’s left was an obvious and simple one and the Nigerian had no trouble in despatching the opener from eight yards, his 62nd goal in 154 Premier League appearances.

It was backs-to-the-wall stuff for Everton after that as the Trotters poured forward in search of an equaliser.

Mikel Alonso twice came close to hauling Bolton level during the opening 45 minutes, but from his first effort moments after Yakubu had struck, Tim Howard clawed away a 22-yard first-time drive.

The Spaniard, on loan from Real Sociedad, then came closer in the 40th minute when he unleashed a powerful angled drive that swerved away from the full-stretch Howard and crashed against the bar.

There also appeared to be a clear case for a penalty in the 14th minute when El Hadji Diouf was brought down in the area by Lee Carsley.

Referee Peter Walton instantly waved away appeals, much to Diouf’s anger, only for replays to prove the Northamptonshire official was correct.

Diouf came close soon after but volleyed over the bar after trapping a Kevin Nolan flick-on on his chest.

Yet despite all the possession, and for the most part penning the visitors back inside their own half for long periods, Bolton came close to conceding a second just before the interval.

Jussi Jaaskelainen made his first save of the game, diving to his right to keep out a downward header from Joseph Yobo as he met a Mikel Arteta corner.

That was a rare moment of respite for Everton, as was the half-time interval because even after the break there was no let up in pressure from Bolton.

Finally the breakthrough came with Anelka rifling a right-foot volley in off the underside of the bar after Phil Jagielka had tried to clear a Diouf cross.

Bolton should then have taken the lead on the hour as another Diouf cross picked out Nolan at the far post, but he skewed his volley wide.

That prompted Thomas Gravesen’s introduction just after the hour, the Dane making his second debut after signing on loan from Celtic yesterday.

He provided the through ball in the 73rd minute that should have led to Everton regaining the lead.

A mistake from Abdoulaye Meite helped the ball on its way to an unmarked Johnson.

But with only Jaaskelainen to beat, a recovering Meite did enough to thwart the England striker, whose eventual shot was pushed wide by the Finnish goalkeeper.

With the game end to end, Meite then forced a reaction save from Howard shortly after, prior to Leon Osman sidefooting over the bar from 12 yards.

Then just 75 seconds from the end of normal time Lescott grabbed the winner as he rose in between half-time sub Andy O’Brien and Jlloyd Samuel to nod home a Gravesen corner
