D.C. United forward Nicholas Addlery wins MLS Player of the Week honors for Week 13

D.C. United forward Nicholas Addlery was selected Major League Soccer's Player of the Week for his performance in United's 4-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids on Thursday, June 28, 2007. The Jamaican-born striker came off the bench in the 12th minute to grab a goal and an assist while leading United (6-4-2, 20 pts) to a victory over the visiting Rapids. With stars Jaime Moreno, Ben Olsen and Bobby Boswell away at the Copa America, D.C. United counted on several of its younger players. Addlery capitalized on the opportunity, scoring the first goal of his MLS career, also a game-winning goal, and notching an assist. The goal came in the 71st minute when he powered into the penalty area to head in an in-swinging corner kick from Fred to give United a 2-1 lead.
Despite a 30-minute storm delay in the second half, Addlery continued his good form when he assisted on Fred's goal in the 82nd minute. Addlery controlled a pass at the top of the penalty area, and dished it to Fred, who ran through at the Rapids defense and slotted home a goal to give United a two-goal advantage.
After a spell in Trinidad and Tobago, Addlery spent last season in the Vietnamese league with Dong Nai FC. He transferred to USL team Virginia Beach Mariners for the 2007 season, and D.C. United signed him as a discovery player in late April.
Addlery's performance helped D.C. United extend its unbeaten streak at home to nine games and puts the four-time MLS champions on 20 points for the season. With the group stages of Copa America finishing July 5, Addlery and other youngsters should continue to see playing time for the club. United returns to action on July 4, when the Kansas City Wizards visit RFK Stadium at 1:00 p.m. ET.
The Major League Soccer Player of the Week is selected each week of the MLS regular season by a panel of journalists from the Professional Soccer Reporters Association (PSRA).

Arsenal boss Wenger hints at more signings
    tribalfooball.com - July 28, 2007

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger admits he could add to his squad before the season kicks off in a fortnight. Arsenal have been linked with a move for Chelsea's Lassana Diarra, while the future of winger Jose Antonio Reyes has to be sorted out, with Real Madrid understood to be close to a deal for the player they had on loan last season. Although Wenger refused to be drawn on specifics when quizzed by reporters this afternoon, the Arsenal manager maintained he was still active in the transfer market.
"We have the potential to do it," he said of the Gunners' chances of recruiting further.
"If I find the right player, I will take him. If I find two, I will do it.
"But it is not compulsory. If we do not get them, we do not get them. We have enough quality.
"That will not be an excuse if I do not get a player, not to compete."

Injury won't put Real Madrid off Chelsea's Robben
    tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Real Madrid remain confident Chelsea will sell Arjen Robben. Robben's knee injury hasn't put off Real, which are willing to pay £15 million for the Holland international.
AS says the Spanish giants, which already have agreed personal terms with Robben's Dad, Hans, are convinced Chelsea will sell before the August 31 deadline with the player now inside the final two years of his current contract.

Atletico Madrid sending two players to Benfica for Simao
    tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Atletico Madrid are expected to confirm today that two players will move to Benfica as part of Simao Sabrosa's £15 million return to Spain. Former Barcelona winger Simao is expected to be unveiled today by Atletico after undergoing a medical and putting pen to paper on a four-year contract.
Marca says two players will move to Benfica in part-exchange. Portuguese duo Ze Castro, who attracted an inquiry from Chelsea earlier this summer, and Costinha are tipped to be the two in question.
"I am very happy to be in Madrid, I come to Atletico to succeed in Spain," declared Simao at Madrid airport yesterday.

Riise excited about new Liverpool era

Riise excited about new Liverpool era
    tribalfooball.com - July 28, 2007

John Arne Riise is excited about the future at Liverpool. He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "These are exciting times for the club. We've got new owners and new players, and there is a real buzz about the place. I'm very happy with the way things are going and really looking forward to the start of the season.
"Everyone gets a buzz when the club signs a big player and it's been no different this summer. We've signed four big players and although it might take them some time to settle I'm sure they'll all be a success.
"We've done well in the friendly games that we've played so far but I don't think you've seen the best of us yet."

Man Utd chief Gill on Heinze: We'll sell to foreign club
    tribalfooball.com - July 28, 2007

Manchester United management accept Gaby Heinze has no future at Old Trafford. But United are still adamant Heinze must move abroad to further his career rather than travel the 30 miles to Liverpool.
Juventus and Real Madrid are among the clubs monitoring the situation though Heinze, 29, is determined to stay in the Premiership.
United chief executive David Gill said last night: "If there's interest from overseas and the valuation's right, I could see him moving."
