Emirates Cup: Wenger Pleased With Van Persie

Emirates Cup: Wenger Pleased With Van Persie

Wenger used Arsenal's two Emirates Cup matches against Paris Saint Germain and Inter Milan to experiment with his team selection, and was rewarded with two 2-1 victories and a handsome piece of silverware.
The Gunners were inscintillating form against Italian champions Inter, but had to come from behind to clinch a deserved victory, with Robin van Persie scoring a brilliant late winner, dragging the ball back inside his marker with a dazzling sleight of foot before crashing the ball into the net.
"It was a great goal, but it was a great team performance," said Wenger.
"We played well and that's the most important thing.
"We know Robin can score special goals and he did that again, but we created lots of chances, developed good team play, and played in the way we like to play at a good pace.
"In a physical championship like in England, you have to be ready."
Dutch striker Van Persie broke a metatarsal while scoring against Manchester United in January, and had missed the rest of the season.
He still finished as the club's top scorer with 13 goals - one more than departed captain Thierry Henry, who had also been sidelined for much of last season.
Wenger said: "We missed him and Thierry together last season. On the score sheet it was a bit too much."
Talking of their involvement for Arsenal last season in the Premiership alone, Wenger stressed: "Robin played 17 games last year and Thierry 16, 33 games together. Robin scored 11 goals in 17, Thierry 10 in 16. You could multiply that by two."
Wenger is hoping that his summer signing from Dinamo Zagreb, Croatian striker Eduardo da Silva, will be available for the Amsterdam Tournament later this week after an appeal to the Home Office for a work permit.
But the French tactician believes that Van Persie is ready to take on the burden of expectation now that Henry has left.
"The media always pick one or two out [superstars]. Who will it be? " the Arsenal manager reflected.
"The players who are picked out mustn't forget the team-play, the teamwork and that we must play as a team.
"That's not easy to resist when you're picked out as a star. But Robin can handle [the pressure on him to score the goals]."
Wenger also revealed that Arsenal forward Jose Antonio Reyes would not be returning to the Emirates Stadium after his loan period at Real Madrid.
Atletico Madrid are said to be leading the chase for Reyes, and Wenger said: "We will make an announcement shortly, but he will not come back here. I cannot tell you more than that at the moment."
And Wenger also insisted there was "no truth" in a report that he had already lined up former Newcastle and West Ham manager Glenn Roeder for the position of director of football with Arsenal.
"I like Glenn Roeder, but I've not met with him," he said.
"At the moment I've not decided to appoint him. He would feature on a list of candidates, though."
Beaten Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini said he believed Arsenal have a bright future, although they may not yet be ready to challenge for the Premiership title.
"This team have so many young good players, but I am not sure if they will be able to compete with Chelsea and Manchester United [next season]," said Mancio.
"However, you never know in football because sometimes strange things can happen.
"I am sure, though, that this team has got a bright future."

Only "Fantastic" Milan For Pato

Only "Fantastic" Milan For Pato

Top clubs from England, Italy and Spain have all been chasing Pato, but the promising Brazilian has eyes only for Milan.
"Milan are flying over to Brazil to sign me? That is fantastic," he told the media in Brazil.
"But I won’t be meeting with their emissaries unless Internacional and my agent Gilmar Veloz give me the go ahead.
"All I can do is wait and hope."
Leonardo, Milan's man in Brazil, will fly to Porto Alegre tomorrow to discuss the move, though Ancelotti insisted yet again on Saturday that the player is unlikely to arrive this summer.
"He is a fantastic player, but not one we are interested in at the moment," the Milan coach declared yesterday.
However, the bosses know they need to hurry in the face of competition, and want to arrive at an agreement which would see the player stay in Brazil for 6-12 months before completing a move to Milan.
Real Madrid, Inter and Chelsea are all ready to match or even better the Rossoneri offer, and continue to hover despite the player having publicly indicated his desire to join Milan.

Madrid Still Chasing "Lost Cause" Kaka?

Madrid Still Chasing "Lost Cause" Kaka?

Spanish sports daily Marca has added more fuel to the Kaka flame as it quotes the Brazilian player's economic advisor's speculation over a possible switch to Real Madrid.

Diogo Kotscho, one of Kaka's coterie of trusted aides, seemed to confirm Real Madrid's potential 90 million euro bid - and even encouraged the player to think over the offer carefully.

He was quoted as having said, "Real Madrid is sure that the amount of money can change Milan's mind.

"And I believe that this is an offer Kaka must think about very carefully."

Of course, the player's thoughts may well pale into irrelevance should Silvio Berlusconi stick to his word and reject this bid out of hand.

Should this mammoth transfer ever come to fruition, it will be the biggest signing in football history, outcosting even Zinedine Zidane's unprecented switch of approximately 70 million euro from Juventus to Real Madrid.

Foi onde me afirmei!"

Logo depois de ofertar a camisola que utilizou no último desafio, frente ao CLuj a Luís Filipe Vieira revelou o sonho que a partir de agora irá acalentar: "Assinei por quatro anos... Gostaria de voltar."

Benfica are keen on Barcelona fullback Juliano Belletti. The Brazil international is on the outer at Barca and has expressed frustration over the lack of action he's seen in the last 12 months.
Benfica plan to use the cash raised from Simao's sale to Atletico Madrid to take Belletti to Portugal. The fullback still has over two years left on his current contract.

Atletico Madrid president: Simao a world star

Atletico Madrid president: Simao a world star
tribalfooball.com - July 28, 2007

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo was delighted to unveil Simao Sabrosa yesterday - the most expensive signing in the club's history.
"In Portugal he is an icon and one of the most important players for his country. And, mainly, for us he is one of the most important players who has given much to Portuguese soccer in these last years and we think that he will be the great reference of Spanish soccer in the coming ones," Cerezo said of the £15 million arrival from Benfica. "He is blessed with a great ability with the ball and extraordinary pace. That indicates that we are in the presence of a great talent of international soccer."
For his part, Simao said: "I must be grateful to Atletico Madrid in their efforts in my signing. I remember when I was with Barcelona, the Atletico fans were always very enthusiastic. And that remained with me.
"I can promise to you that I am going to work to help the club and to take it where it must be: among the top three of the Liga and to win titles. I am going to do everything I can to achieve this."

Adu resists Premiership for Benfica move

Adu resists Premiership for Benfica move
tribalfooball.com - July 29, 2007

Freddy Adu is set to resist interest from England to sign with Portuguese giants Benfica. Real Salt Lake coach Jason Kreis has confirmed teenage midfielder Adu has been granted permission to speak to Benfica over a proposed move to Europe.
Adu was not present for Real Salt Lake's game against the New England Revolution on Saturday night and Kreis acknowledges he does not expect Adu to return to the club.
"Major League Soccer and Real Salt Lake have given permission to Freddy Adu to travel to Europe to continue discussions with Portuguese club Benfica," said Kreis.
"This is certainly a scenario that does not surprise us, and we would like to thank Freddy for his time here and wish him the best of luck."
A native of Ghana, the 18-year-old has been previously linked to several of Europe's top clubs, including Chelsea and Real Madrid while he also spent two weeks on trial with Manchester United last year.
Adu has scored one goal and contributed two assists in 11 games this season with Salt Lake, who acquired the midfielder in a trade from D.C in December last year.
Kreis added: "Really, what we know about it is that Freddy has received a fantastic opportunity to go overseas and play, where he has said he wanted to (play) for a while.
"In my opinion, I have to respect that and allow him the opportunity to do that. If we had forced him to play here, there would be a possibly injury, and that whole deal could be scrapped."

Totti Calls Cicinho To Join Him At Roma

Totti Calls Cicinho To Join Him At Roma

The Italian star is keen to see his club bolster their squad for the new season and thinks that the 27-year-old would be a good addition.

"I think that he would be an excellent addition to the team," Totti explained. "I really hope that he joins.

Totti rang Cicinho a month ago to tell him about Roma and to try and convince him and has been asked to be kept up to date about negotiations.

Cicinho has already confirmed that he would be interested in making the switch after contact was made between the two clubs last month.

Bernd Schuster has chosen to use the former São Paulo player on the left and that is something that could edge the player out of the Bernabéu.

“I am not used to playing on the left, I prefer being on the right, in my natural role," Cicinho said recently.

"If there is no room for me in that position I will have to look for another team because I have no intention of playing a whole season out of position.

”I would like to stay at Madrid, but I have received offers. We’ll see what happens next.”

Six-pointer ahead for Chicago, TFC

Six-pointer ahead for Chicago, TFC

TORONTO FC v CHICAGO FIRE
BMO FIELD, Toronto, Ont., Canada
3 p.m. ET (TeleFutura; CBC)
July 29, 2007 (WEEK 17) / MLS Game #110

A real six-pointer is ahead at BMO Field on Sunday as two teams looking to pull themselves up the Eastern Conference table come together. Toronto FC is playing their first home game in more than a month, after taking a win and three draws from their extended six-game road swing. The Chicago Fire have won just once in their last 11 games, but hope the addition of Cuauhtémoc Blanco will provide the drive they need to get to the MLS Cup Playoffs. The clubs are separated by just three points at the foot of the East standings, but just 11 points separate first to last in the division.

5/12: TOR 3, CHI 1 (Dichio 24; Goldthwaite 51; Edu 75 - Rolfe 36)
7/9: CHI 1, TOR 1 (Barrett 70 pen - Edu 78)
• In their first meeting, Toronto FC scored the first goal in club history - and won their first game, defeating the Fire 3-1 at BMO Field on May 12.
• After conceding 10 goals in losing their opening four games, the crowd at Exhibition Place didn't have to wait long before Danny Dichio knifed in to stab home, the goal ending TFC's scoreless run at 383 minutes, the 10th-longest in league history.
• The Fire pulled level 12 minutes later when Chris Rolfe hammered home a long-range drive, then just before the break, both Dichio and Fire midfielder Diego Gutierrez were sent off.
• TFC retook the lead just six minutes after the break when Kevin Goldthwaite ripped a left-footed drive past Matt Pickens for his first professional goal, then an Andrea Lombardo cross found Maurice Edu, and the No. 1 pick from January's SuperDraft also made no mistake for his first professional goal.
• Three weeks ago, the teams traded goals eight minutes apart late in the game before settling for a 1-1 draw.
• The Fire had been shut out in back-to-back games and five of their previous seven, but finally found the back of the net in the 70th minute, after Chad Barrett was bundled over by Tyrone Marshall in the area. Barrett stepped up to take his own penalty, sending the 'keeper the other way for his fourth goal of the year.
• But the two No. 1 overall picks the last two years in the MLS SuperDraft teamed up for the tying goal in the 78th minute. Racing into the area, Marvell Edu received a lofted 35-yard pass from Marvell Wynne, near the midfield stripe. Edu brought it down with his chest before stabbing it past Matt Pickens from about at the penalty spot for his third goal of the season.
• Here's Denis Hamlett's team (4-4-2): Matt Pickens - Logan Pause, C.J. Brown, Diego Gutierrez, Gonzalo Segares - Calen Carr, Chris Armas, Bakary Soumare, Ivan Guerrero - Thiago (Justin Mapp 63), Chad Barrett (Floyd Franks 83). Substitutes Not Used: Jon Busch, Jeff Curtin, Jim Curtin, Willian Oliveira, Brian Plotkin
• Here's Johnston's team (4-4-2): Srdjan Djekanovic - Marvell Wynne, Tyrone Marshall, Jim Brennan, Todd Dunivant - Ronnie O'Brien, Maurice Edu, Carl Robinson, Andy Welsh (Chris Pozniak 65) - Danny Dichio, Collin Samuel. Substitutes Not Used: Andrew Boyens, Adam Braz, Miguel Canizalez, Jeff Cunningham, Boris Pardo, Marco Reda
TORONTO FC
Toronto FC are finally back home, concluding their six-game road trip because of the FIFA U-20 World Cup with a 2-0 loss to the Columbus Crew last weekend, also ending their four-game unbeaten run. TFC sits in sixth place in the Eastern Conference with 19 points from 17 matches, three points ahead of the Chicago Fire and five points in arrears of fifth-place D.C. United.
LAST MATCH
• The Crew were coming off a loss away to Chivas USA that put an end to a six-game winless run, while Toronto FC were completing a six-game road swing that began with a loss, but had since seen a victory and three draws.
• After a quiet first half, Guillermo Barros Schelotto hit for two goals in six minutes to send the Crew on their way. First, in the 50th minute, a lovely buildup saw an overlapping Frankie Hejduk get the ball on the right and float in a cross. It sailed over Alejandro Moreno's head, but Schelotto came in behind to knock it home first-time.
• Then Columbus won a free kick just a bit outside the TFC area. The Argentinean playmaker hooked his curling effort around the wall and while Toronto 'keeper Srdjan Djekanovic was able to get his hands to it, the ball still bobbled into the net for Schelotto's fourth goal on the year, to go with seven assists.
• TFC head coach Mo Johnston made two changes to the team that played to a scoreless draw with Houston Dynamo the weekend before. Chris Pozniak came into the central midfield in place of the suspended Maurice Edu, and Jeff Cunningham returned from injury in place of the hampered Danny Dichio up top - though his appearance didn't last long.
• Here's Johnston's team (4-4-2): Srdjan Djekanovic - Marvell Wynne, Andrew Boyens (Andy Welsh 59), Tyrone Marshall, Todd Dunivant - Ronnie O'Brien, Jim Brennan, Chris Pozniak, Carl Robinson - Collin Samuel, Jeff Cunningham (Andrea Lombardo 7 / Danny Dichio 70). Substitutes Not Used: Adam Braz, Joey Melo, Boris Pardo, Marco Reda
TEAM NEWS
• Toronto is happy to finally return to their BMO Field home, after taking a creditable six points out of 18 possible on their extended road swing.
• "We have to stop using [the road trip] as an excuse," said forward Danny Dichio after the game. "We know we have fantastic fans, and we know we have a fantastic stadium, but we have to be picking up points on the road."
• Still, the Reds know they have to gain maximum points at Exhibition Place if any home-field advantage is going to bear out.
• "We've been on the road for a while now, and we never performed today," said TFC head coach Mo Johnston. "Obviously, we need to win games at home now. We've been on a six-game stretch away from home. Now we can go back to Toronto, which is a difficult place for [opposing] teams to play."
• When Toronto left for their road trip, they hadn't take a point on their travels - a streak that continued with the loss in New England to begin the tour. But after the four-game unbeaten run, they were looking to maintain the streak.
• "We're disappointed. We felt we could have come here and got something. After the first half it was tight -- nil-nil -- they didn't have many chances. In the second half, they had two chances and finished them," Jim Brennan said. "Obviously, we are disappointed with the result today, because it was a long road trip and we've done well on the road trip and we wanted to get something today, but it just didn't go our way."
• The Toronto attack was noticeably hobbled against the Crew. Forward Jeff Cunningham barely made it through the opening minutes of the game before having to leave after re-injuring the same adductor that had him listed as questionable earlier in the day. Twenty-year-old Toronto native Andrea Lombardo filled in up front for most of the game, before a less than 100 percent Danny Dichio took over the reins late in the second half. "With [injuries] it's been very hard, especially when you come against a team that's playing fairly well," said Johnston.
• On Wednesday night, Toronto FC played host to Aston Villa FC of the English Premiership. After going down 2-0 on a pair of goals by Luke Moore, TFC fought back to level the count through Todd Dunivant and Andrea Lombardo. But in the final eight minutes John Carew found the back of the net and Moore completed his hat trick to give Villa the victory.
• "I felt our guys held the ball well, created a bunch of chances," Johnston said. "To be honest with you, if we sat up here at the start of the season and I said we're going to hang in there with Aston Villa ... you'd be looking at me as if I was crazy. Overall if I was assessing the game, especially with the talent we were playing against, I'm very happy."
• However, the match revealed some injury concerns for Johnston. Dichio is battling a sore back and forward Jeff Cunningham might face a long layoff to recover from an injury to his abdominal area. Johnston revealed on Wednesday that Cunningham might miss four to six weeks with the injury that has kept the striker out of three of TFC's last four games. As well, Johnston also said that goalkeeper Greg Sutton may miss the rest of the season due to the after-effects of a concussion suffered in June.
• On Wednesday, defender Tyrone Marshall also left the game due to what Johnston described as the effects of a pregame "stomach bug." Perhaps more seriously, defender Marvell Wynne suffered a hamstring injury in the 75th minute and had to be carried off the field. "I heard a little pop, but it should be fine," Wynne said. "No worries. I should be back by Sunday, we'll see. I'm getting an MRI just to make sure nothing is really bad."
• Here's Johnston's team: David Monsalve, Marvell Wynne, Jim Brennan, Todd Dunivant, Tyrone Marshall (Andrew Boyens 66), Ronnie O'Brien, Maurice Edu (Joey Melo 75), Carl Robinson, Andy Welsh (Chris Pozniak 63), Collin Samuel, Danny Dichio (Andrea Lombardo 49)
CHICAGO FIRE
The Chicago Fire return to league action for the first time in two weeks, seeing their winless streak extended to six games in their last game, a 4-0 loss at home to Houston Dynamo in Juan Carlos Osorio's debut as head coach. The Fire sit in seventh place in the Eastern Conference with 16 points from 16 matches, three behind Toronto FC.
LAST MATCH
• Dynamo hadn't lost since the beginning of June, and hadn't allowed a goal in nearly nine hours, while the Fire had won just once in their last 11 games.
• In the Fire head coaching debut of Juan Carlos Osorio, Dynamo showed their intentions early before finally breaking through in the 31st minute. Ricardo Clark, who earlier hit the crossbar, hooked a ball on the flank to Wade Barrett. Barrett banged in a low cross from the left corner and Stuart Holden reached behind himself on the run to punch the ball past Matt Pickens.
• Dynamo broke the game open with two goals in four minutes around the hour. In the 58th minute, Nate Jaqua came back to haunt the team that dealt him away in the offseason. Joseph Ngwenya was trying to dribble out of a jam in the area, but the ball was poked free right to Jaqua, and he turned a ripped a high blast inside the near post for his first goal with Houston.
• Then Ngwenya scored one of the goals of the season. After Jaqua's industry won the ball, Ngwenya beat Fire defender Jim Curtin with a half-moon, collecting the ball on the other side, then rounded Pickens as he came off his line then went to ground. From almost on the goal line, Ngwenya pushed the ball along the line and off the inside of the far post (62).
• Chris Wondolowski provided the final touch just after the full 90 minutes ticked over. Dwayne De Rosario went on a run through the Fire defense and hit an angled shot that Pickens just got a hand to. Wondolowski came running in at the far post to just touch the ball over the line and into the empty net.
• In his first game in charge, Juan Carlos Osorio brought Bruno Menezes, Jim Curtin and Thiago into the team, with C.J. Brown, Calen Carr and Logan Pause all out.
• Here's Osorio's team (4-1-4-1): Matt Pickens - Bruno Menezes (Calen Carr 73), Jim Curtin, Diego Gutierrez, Gonzalo Segares - Bakary Soumare - Justin Mapp, Chris Armas, Thiago, Ivan Guerrero (Willian Oliveira 64) - Chad Barrett. Substitutes Not Used: Jon Busch, Floyd Franks, Jeff Curtin, Logan Pause, Brian Plotkin
• "They had two good chances on long balls over the top. On the other hand, we had two good chances that we didn't score because the final touch, whether it was a pass or a shot on goal, was very weak. In other words, I thought we had pretty good chances on goal. In the second half, we started taking the ball at them and took some chances defensively speaking," Osorio said. "I can't deny the fact that I think we didn't defend the goals very well. There is a lot of work to do. This is a game that I have learned a lot from and hopefully we can start putting things in place. At the end, we cannot just get into the attacking third and not even have a shot on goal."
TEAM NEWS
• Since that last league loss, the Fire have made a significant addition, as Cuauhtémoc Blanco finally joined the team after playing with Mexico's national team in the CONCACAF Gold Cup and Copa America. He made his debut in the Fire's 1-1 draw with Celtic FC on July 22, three days after the Scottish power lost 2-0 in the MLS All-Star Game.
• "(Blanco) brings something special to the team and those are his vision and his creativity," Osorio said. "If you look back and analyze the game, you'll notice that he was in on 75 percent of the times that we got in the attacking third. It was through him that we created better chances, and to put the icing on the cake, he scored a beautiful goal. Hopefully, he will get fitter and fitter and we'll get more of him in the games to come."
• Blanco scored the Fire's goal in the 30th minute, before being taken off in the 58th minute. Derek Riordan hit for the equalizer 10 minutes from full time.
• "I always try to score and I had an opportunity to score," Blanco said. "The truth is I am very happy I was able to score. The objective of today's game was not met as we did not win. But I think little by little we will keep playing better and better and turn these results into victories."
• Here's Osorio's team on the day: Matt Pickens (Jon Busch 46), Diego Gutierrez, C.J. Brown (Dasan Robinson 65), Gonzalo Segares, Chris Armas (Brian Plotkin 65), Ivan Guerrero, Bakary Soumare (Willian Oliveira 77), Cuauhtemoc Blanco (Thiago 58), Bruno Menezes (Logan Pause 46), Calen Carr, Chad Barrett (Floyd Franks 59)
• "I let my players know that I am very disappointed that we did not win this game," Osorio said. "I think that if we finished 25 percent of our chances we could have and would have won the game by at least a two-goal difference."
• Blanco played in an attacking midfield role behind a front two of Chad Barrett and Calen Carr. "There were good signs," Osorio said. "We had better perception and I think in general we defended quite well but we'll continue improving the team. There is only way to do it and it is to work and to work on the training pitch. That's what we're going to do."
• However, Osorio believes the Fire have great room for improvement as they have scored just 13 goals in 16 MLS contests. "We need to work and have a better mindset," Osorio said. "We cannot have possession just for the sake of having possession but when we have possession we have to have a purpose. We passed too many times in the attacking third (of the field) and if we had that killer instinct, we would attack more."
• After the signing of Blanco, the Fire added another high-profile Central American striker when they announced the acquisition of Costa Rican international Paulo Cesar Wanchope. Wanchope, who played in all three of Costa Rica's games in Germany 2006, has 72 caps and has scored 45 goals for his country. He made one of the biggest moves ever from Costa Rica in 1996, when he signed with Derby County of the English Premiership. In all, the 31-year-old played eight seasons in England, for Derby (to 1999; 72 league appearances, 23 goals), West Ham United (1999-2000; 35 apps, 12 goals) and Manchester City (2000-04; 64 apps, 27 goals). Since leaving Europe, Wanchope has been hit hard by injuries, playing in Spain for Malagá, at Al-Gharrafa in Qatar, Argentina's Rosario Central and Tokyo FC in the J-League.
• The Fire were supposed to face Mexican side Santos Laguna on Wednesday in a friendly in La Joya, Texas, but the game was cancelled after a two-hour thunderstorm flooded La Joya Stadium, leaving the field unplayable.

Fire feel corner turned with victory

Fire feel corner turned with victory

TORONTO -- The Chicago Fire were scheduled to leave Toronto on Sunday evening after their afternoon match with Toronto FC in order to get back to Chicago for Monday's training. Some MLS teams do a post-game sprint out of the locker room when a flight must be caught, but little urgency could be detected amongst the Fire players. Music was blasting from the stereo, players were happily chatting with each other at their lockers and everyone seemed to be savoring the moment. The feeling amongst the team was palpable -- the Fire's season had turned a corner.
In the midst of a six-match winless streak and a 1-8-3 record since the start of May, the Fire recorded their biggest win over the season, a 3-0 decision against Toronto FC at BMO Field. Chicago collected 10 shots on goal to Toronto's three, outshot TFC 14-5 overall and dominated the game from start to finish.
"I think all the hard work has paid off, at least for today's game," said Chicago coach Juan Carlos Osorio. "At both ends of the pitch I think we did very well. I can only be very pleased with our performance today and I hope we can expect these things from now on."
It was the Fire's first victory since a 3-2 win against Columbus on June 3, and it also marked a few other firsts. It was Osorio's first win since taking over as Chicago's head coach July 9 and his first victory overall as a coach in Major League Soccer.
The game was also Chicago's first win against Toronto in three games this season. The Fire had previously tied 1-1 with TFC on July 7 at Toyota Park, and became the first MLS team to ever lose to the first-year side in a 3-1 loss on May 12.
Sunday's match also saw the first regular-season MLS goal for midfielder Ivan Guerrero since June 29, 2005. In the 37th minute, Guerrero collected a pass from Cuauhtemoc Blanco in the Toronto penalty area and then maneuvered past TFC midfielder Chris Pozniak toward the goal. Guerrero sent a perfectly-placed kick over the head of Toronto goalkeeper David Monsalve and into the left-hand corner of the net for what would be the game-winning goal.
Guerrero chuckled and held his head in mock embarrassment when he was told that it was his first regular-season score in 52 games.
"We are happy," Guerrero said. "[It was] a big win. Toronto has got a good team."
The Fire's next two goal involved Calen Carr. Playing in the midfield, the 24-year-old collected an assist and a goal in the second half to cement Chicago's victory. Carr's goal, which put Chicago ahead 2-0 just before the hour mark, came on a somewhat fortunate chip shot that fooled Monsalve.
"I opened up on the right and I saw Blanco making a run through the middle," Carr said. "The last defender on the left side pinched in on Cuauhtemoc and he was smart to leave it for me. Then I saw a defender coming real fast at me and I tried to sidestep him, put it anywhere near the goal and luckily it took a deflection and went our way."
It is perhaps no coincidence that Chicago's biggest win over the season came in Blanco's first league game. The Mexican star didn't have an exceptional game by his standards, but he helped to set up Carr's goal and recorded an assist on his pass to Guerrero.
"He did well today, and I think he will do a lot better," said Osorio. "He knows he might not find the same space or time that he is used to in the Mexican league. As long as our strikers keep making their runs I think he will always find them."
The win moved Chicago ahead of Toronto for sixth in the Eastern Conference with 19 points. In spite of the club's struggles this season, the MLS Cup Playoffs are still a possibility for Osorio's squad.
"[The playoffs] are our main objective now," said the Fire coach. "If we keep doing things the way we do it today, I think it's in our reach."
Carr echoed his coach in using Sunday's win as a template for Chicago's 13 remaining games.
"We've been struggling for a little while and to get a big win on the road like this is going to give us a lot of confidence," Carr said. "I think it was a gusty performance from everybody from back to front.
"The locker room is alive right now," he added. "Everyone feels great."

Regular Season Caution Accumulation
A player who accumulates five (5) yellow cards over the course of the MLS Regular Season shall be suspended from the next Regular Season game in which he is eligible to appear and fined $250. After imposition of the first fine and one-game suspension for accumulating five (5) yellow cards over the course of an MLS Regular Season, a player who accumulates an additional three (3) yellow cards shall be suspended from the next regular season game in which he is eligible to appear and fined $500. After the imposition of the second fine and one-game suspension by virtue of accumulating eight (8) yellow cards over the course of a regular season, that player shall be suspended for one MLS Regular Season game and fined $750 for each accumulation of three (3) yellow cards awarded to him in any remaining MLS Regular Season games.
Good Behavior Incentive
If a player receives a caution during the Regular Season that brings him within one caution of any of the suspension thresholds (e.g., 4 cautions, 7 cautions), he shall be placed on "Warning." If a player is placed on "Warning" and appears in THREE (3) consecutive games without receiving a caution, being sent off or sanctioned by the MLS Disciplinary Committee for an infraction that occurs during one of the THREE (3) consecutive games, that player's personal caution total shall be reduced by ONE (1) caution. A player may only benefit from the Good Behavior Incentive one time per season.

Chivas trip continues in Kansas City

Chivas trip continues in Kansas City

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS v CHIVAS USA
ARROWHEAD STADIUM, Kansas City, Mo.
6 p.m. CT (MetroSports; FSN-PT)
July 29, 2007 (WEEK 17) / MLS Game #111

Chivas USA continue their two-game, four-day trip East with another difficult test, taking on the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday evening. Chivas started their trip with a rare road victory, defeating the New York Red Bulls 2-0 on MLS Primetime Thursday, beginning a stretch of four away games overall. The Wizards are still just a point out of top spot in the Eastern Conference, behind New York and New England, despite having won just once since early June. They are coming off a bitter 2-2 draw with Colorado last weekend, where Eddie Johnson extended his goal-scoring streak to his last four games - where he's scored nine goals.

ALL-TIME (4 meetings): Wizards 2 wins, 7 goals ... Chivas USA 0 wins, 3 goals ... Draws 2
AT KANSAS CITY (2 meetings): Wizards 2 wins, 5 goals ... Chivas USA 0 wins, 1 goal ... Draws 0
• This is the first of two meetings between the clubs this season, the lone encounter set for Arrowhead Stadium. They are scheduled to meet Sept. 22 at The Home Depot Center.
LAST YEAR (MLS):
8/19: CHV 1, KC 1 (Bornstein 83 - Burciaga 42)
10/7: KC 2, CHV 1 (van den Bergh 50; Burciaga 74 - Suarez 71)
• Chivas USA have never defeated the Wizards in the two years of the club's existence. Kansas City has won both previous meetings at Arrowhead Stadium, while the teams have played to draws in both of their meetings in Carson.
• This is the coaching debut of Preki against the team with which he was so identified. The left-footed magician spent nine of his 10 years in MLS with the Wizards, winning an MLS Cup in 2000, scoring championships in 1997 and 2003 and the Honda MVP in 1997 and 2003.

KANSAS CITY WIZARDS
The Kansas City Wizards went a man down and were unable to hold on to a lead, playing to a 2-2 draw last Saturday with the Colorado Rapids at Arrowhead Stadium. The Wizards are still in third place in the Eastern Conference with 26 points from 17 matches, a point behind joint-leaders New York Red Bulls and New England Revolution, while a point ahead of the Columbus Crew.
LAST MATCH
• The Wizards were coming off a victory against Real Salt Lake that had put an end to a six-game losing streak. But the Rapids had not been as fortunate, still winless since May 26, a span of eight games, and having been shutout in three consecutive matches and five of their last six.
• The Wizards took the lead in the 24th minute as Eddie Johnson continued his rich vein of form. This came from a terrific movement, Sasha Victorine freeing Davy Arnaud on the right, who drove a low cross across the top of the six where Johnson had a step on his defender, and the All-Star turned the cross home inside the near post.
• The Rapids put an end to their 382-minute streak without a goal in the 42nd minute when Jimmy Conrad was ruled to have pushed over Herculez Gomez as they raced into the area after a ball that 'keeper Kevin Hartman was sliding to control. Jovan Kirovski hammered the resulting spot kick right down the center of the goal.
• Yet it took the Wizards not a minute to respond. Arnaud broke down a pair of defenders on the left and lashed a low shot that beat Bouna Coundoul's dive -- but not the left-hand post. But Johnson was there to knock home the rebound into the empty net for his league-leading 12th goal of the season, and his ninth in his last four league appearances.
• The game had been a fractious affair from the start, and it boiled over in the 67th minute, when Jose Burciaga Jr. was sent off after he pushed Coundoul after the two had become tangled in the area.
• Nine minutes later the Rapids took advantage. Terry Cooke swung in a corner from the left and Facundo Erpen got up at the near post to flick home a glancing header for his first goal since joining the Rapids and give his new team a third draw in four games.
• Wizards head coach Curt Onalfo made no changes to the team that defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 the weekend before. Here's Onalfo's team (4-3-1-2): Kevin Hartman - Jack Jewsbury, Jimmy Conrad, Nick Garcia, Jose Burciaga Jr. - Sasha Victorine (Kurt Morsink 46), Kerry Zavagnin, Michael Harrington - Carlos Marinelli - Davy Arnaud, Eddie Johnson (Yura Movsisyan 81) (Ryan Pore 89). Substitutes Not Used: Will John, Eric Kronberg, Ryan Raybould, Tyson Wahl
TEAM NEWS
• Johnson's continuing outstanding form is still bringing results for the Wizards. He has scored in the last four games he's played for the club, and it has won three and tied one in that stretch. The Wizards have not lost any of the seven games in which Johnson has scored this season, going 6-0-1.
• "It is always nice to score two goals in a game, but when you don't win it takes that feeling away a little. We always look to push forward and attack as a team. Tonight we did that well even when we were a man down," Johnson said. "This was an emotional game and I am a passionate player, but now we have to learn from this and prepare for the next game. Every game matters and we will continue to work hard and not give up."
• Despite the Rapids' physical approach, despite going down a man, Onalfo was pleased with the Wizards effort throughout the entire 90 minutes.
• "We are a team that doesn't give up. I love these guys; they are a tremendous group of players. Even when we were a man down Davy [Arnaud] had a chance at the end. Everything was against us at the end and we still came out with a point," Onalfo said. "We will not deter from who we are; a team that goes forward, controls the pace of the game and pushes the action. We also will not let outside factors dictate our style of play."
• Arnaud has been the first choice in recent games to partner Eddie Johnson in attack, and even with Johnson's run of goals, nearly came away with the late game-winner.
• "Ten men or not ten men, we're a good enough team that two goals should be good enough to get a win at home," Arnaud said. "Having said that, we had chances that it could have been three or four. It's unfortunate because we played well enough to get a win."
• The next three games could be vital for the Wizards. With the new playoff structure, a team like Chivas - third place in the Western Conference but now a point ahead of Kansas City - could be battling with the Wizards for a spot come October. Then following is a home-and-home series with New England - a pair of definite six-pointers, with the teams just a point apart.
• "I believe we have a team that can compete to win our [conference]. I believe we have a team that can win a championship," Onalfo said. "But this team has not made the playoffs in two years. So getting into the playoffs needs to be the number one priority. Once we're able to do that, God willing, then we start honing in on trying to win the [conference] and position ourselves for home-field advantage."
CHIVAS USA
Chivas USA began their four-game road swing with a quality result, going to Giants Stadium and coming away with a 2-0 victory against Eastern Conference leaders New York Red Bulls on MLS Primetime Thursday. The win moved Chivas to 27 points from 16 matches, now just three points behind FC Dallas for second place and six behind Western Conference leaders Houston Dynamo.
LAST MATCH
• Chivas were beginning a two-game stretch in four days against Eastern Conference opposition having won just once on the road on the season, while the Red Bulls had won twice in their last seven games yet still stayed tied for the lead in the Eastern Conference.
• Chivas USA took the lead in the 38th minute through Ante Razov. Maykel Galindo was given time to run at Seth Stammler on the right, and just as he entered the area he whipped in a quick cross where Razov snuck between two defenders and snapped home a bullet header inside the right-hand post.
• Three minutes from the end, Chivas doubled their lead through local boy Sacha Kljestan. Winning the ball in midfield, Kljestan played quickly to Razov, whose first-team return pass over the Red Bulls back line freed Kljestan. He raced in alone before sliding a shot just under Jon Conway's left side from the top of the area.
• Before that, the Red Bulls had their chances and could have drawn level on a few occasions. Juan Pablo Angel saw a header graze the outside of the post in the first half, and early in the second, Jozy Altidore turned a shot off the bar. Angel nearly grabbed a consolation goal in stoppage time, but his looping header from a corner was headed off the line by Rodrigo Lopez.
• Chivas USA head coach Preki made one change to the team that defeated the Columbus Crew 2-1 at home the weekend before. Alex Zotinca came back from suspension, replacing Orlando Perez in the back four as Preki also readjusted his lines.
• Here's Preki's team (4-4-2): Brad Guzan - Alex Zotinca (Rodrigo Lopez 83), Claudio Suarez, Shavar Thomas, Jonathan Bornstein - Sacha Kljestan, Lawson Vaughn, Jesse Marsch, Francisco Mendoza - Maykel Galindo (Laurent Merlin 73), Ante Razov (Jason Hernandez 92+). Substitutes Not Used: Preston Burpo, Jorge Flores, Anthony Hamilton, Orlando Perez
• "We were disciplined and we were for the most part, in almost every moment of the game ... organized," Preki said. "We knew what we wanted. We knew our chances would come, and when they come, we'll put them away and have some success. Fortunately enough, things worked out tonight in our favor."
TEAM NEWS
• For Razov, it was the 104th goal of his MLS career, putting him just four away from the all-time lead currently held by D.C. United forward Jaime Moreno and Real Salt Lake head coach Jason Kreis. Moreno pulled into the tie earlier this year with his third goal of the season, but has not scored since May 19. Razov's goal was his sixth of the season.
• "I've actually missed a few headers in the past few weeks, and it's something that I've really worked on the past couple days in training, and this time, it paid off, so I'm really happy about that," Razov said. " ... It's nice. Let's hope it will all add up when I'm all said and done, but the most important thing was three points." Said Preki: "With Ante, if he gets a chance in the box he can put it away. I thought today he finished his chance pretty good, and also he had a hand in the second goal, Sacha Kljestan's goal, to put the game away. He had a hand in both goals."
• Chivas didn't have many scoring opportunities, but they capitalized on the ones they did get, which couldn't be said of the Red Bulls, which twice hit the woodwork.
• "I'm not so sure if they had that many chances," Preki said. "If you're talking about long balls and crosses, yeah they had a few of those. They had one good chance in the second half when [Jozy] Altidore got away from us and obviously he hit the crossbar. ... I think when you go on the road and play a quality team like that, you've got to limit their opportunities, and I think we limited them."
• It was just Chivas' fifth ever win away from home - and one came against the Galaxy at The Home Depot Center. "We've been having a tough time on the road," Preki said. "Is it because we're such a young team and we're growing into the whole thing or is it that we don't really feel comfortable playing on the road? I don't know what it is, but I think tonight we played good. We came here and did a professional job, like I expect us to do every time we go on the road."
• Said Razov: "We wanted to start the second half of the season on a positive. A two-game road trip in two very difficult places, to get a win here is big for us. It's well-documented, our struggles on the road. We've won a couple of games on the road now, so it's a good start."
• Kljestan's goal was his first since the opening game of the season, and was even sweeter considering it came near Seton Hall University, from where he rounded out his college career in 2005.
• "Jason (Hernandez) and myself had probably 60 people total between the two of us. It's always exciting to come back and play at Giants Stadium because this is a place when I was in college, I watched Jason play here and I watched the MetroStars play and supported them while I was out here, so it's always a big deal for me to come back and play here," he said.

Card Suspensions
Red card and caution point accumulation suspensions collected in Regular Season Games shall be served in a Player's next Regular Season Game. Any suspensions for yellow card points earned in a Player's last Regular Season Game will not carry over into the Playoffs, or into the next League Season.
However, the applicable fine will be collected in the current Season. Any Players who receives a red card in his last Game of the Season (Regular Season or Playoffs), will serve the one Game suspension during their next Game (whether it's during the Playoffs, Championship Game, or in the next Regular Season Game of the following season). All red card and caution point suspensions will, if necessary, follow a Player to a new Team. All fines associated with cautions or send-offs will be collected in the current season (before the calendar year expires).

*MLS teams are assessed a matching team fine for their players' cumulative individual fines for yellow cards issued for either "dissent" or "showing a lack of respect for the game."
