Serie A Week 8 - 20/10/07 (19.30 UK)
Reggina - Inter

Stadio Granillo

Inter aim to consolidate their position on top of the table as they visit a Reggina side that is yet to win a single game.

The Nerazzurri went into the break for international duty flying high thanks to their 4-1 mauling of Roma and 2-1 victory over Napoli. With Juventus and Roma facing potential banana skins this weekend, they will be eager to extend that advantage with victory in Calabria.

The Beneamata has only ever lost once at the Granillo, a 2-1 result in October 2000 that prompted Marcello Lippi’s resignation and Reggina haven’t scored in this fixture since 2002. Having said that, two of the last three editions have ended goalless, so Inter’s free-scoring side must maintain the tempo.

Amaranto boss Massimo Ficcadenti’s job is in the balance, but he cannot be realistically expected to get a result against Inter or face the sack. That absence of pressure may even help his team to overcome the anxiety of recent weeks.

Big problems could occur if star striker Nicola Amoruso does not recover from a muscular injury in time for Saturday’s game. On form 20-year-old Fabio Ceravolo is tipped to take over for only his second start of the season. Francesco Modesto is already suspended in midfield, while Miguel Garcia and Kris Stadsgaard are also battling fitness worries.

Inter still have Marco Materazzi and Olivier Dacourt sidelined, but Patrick Vieira is finally ready to make his Serie A comeback after months of injury drama. The former Juventus and Arsenal man played for 30 minutes with the Primavera youth side this week and can join Esteban Cambiasso, Dejan Stankovic and Luis Figo in midfield. Zlatan Ibrahimovic may be rested following international duty, but with seven goals in as many games, Roberto Mancini never wants to be without the Swede.

Keep an eye on: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter) – Quite simply the form player in Serie A at the moment, not to mention the creative centre of almost all Inter’s attacking moves.

Last season: Reggina 0-0 Inter

Form guide: Reggina (L L L D D) Inter (W D W W W)

Reggina (probable): Campagnolo; Lanzaro, Valdez, Cherubin, Aronica; Vigiani, Barreto, Cascione, Hallfredsson; Cozza; Ceravolo

Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; Zanetti, Samuel, Cordoba, Maxwell; Figo, Vieira, Cambiasso, Stankovic; Crespo, Ibrahimovic

Reggina ready for Inter Milan - Aronica

Reggina defender Salvatore Aronica says the international break has been ideal preparation for their clash with Serie A leaders Inter Milan.

Aronica said: "We are preparing for the next game in the best way we ever have. We know it will be a difficult test and we would like to give a great joy to our fans.

"Inter are a great team, technical and physical qualities of the highest individual order.

"We're not favourites on paper, but we will give it everything."

Aronica fears Zlatan the great Friday 19 October, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reggina defender Salvatore Aronica isn’t looking forward to marking Inter’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic tomorrow evening. “I’d need a gun to stop him.”

The leaders visit the Stadio Granillo fully expecting to ease to maximum points with the seven-goal Ibrahimovic their main threat.

“Zlatan is a player of such quality, perhaps the best in the world at the moment,” Aronica grimaced. “It would take a gun to stop him.

“He will be very difficult to mark, I’ll have to keep as close to him as possible and not leave any inviting spaces.

“They are a great team full of champions and they deserve to be at the top. All we can do is our best.”

Reggina are yet to win this season and are in dire need of a heroic performance to ease the pressure on under-fire boss Massimo Ficcadenti.

Mancio bemoans banner penalty Friday 19 October, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Inter boss Roberto Mancini criticises the decision to penalise Beneamata fans for anti-Napoli banners and gives an update on the squad’s fitness.

The reigning champions have been ordered to shut a section of the San Siro after offensive banners were unveiled during the Week 7 clash against Napoli.

“It was just one idiot and there are always some at every ground every Sunday,” Mancini moaned.

“Of course it’s not good to read certain things, but it wasn’t all that serious and it’s wrong to punish all the fans for something they had nothing to do with.”

Inter now face a demanding week with three away games looming against Reggina, CSKA Moscow and Palermo.

“We need to be careful because it will be a very tough week and we can’t afford to slip up in any of the games,” Mancio insisted. ”But we have had the international break and we can do it.”

French star Patrick Vieira is believed to be ready make his first League appearance of the campaign against Reggina, while several players are likely to be rested.

“Vieira might play as he is almost back to full fitness, but it will probably just be part of the game,” the ex-Lazio boss continued.

“Nicolas Burdisso has some big bruises so he’ll be resting on Saturday and Dejan Stankovic won’t play as we need him ready for Moscow.”

Ficcadenti stands up to Inter Saturday 20 October, 2007

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reggina are the ultimate underdogs when they face leaders Inter this evening, especially as Nicola Amoruso is injured, but Massimo Ficcadenti assures they won’t be negative.

Star striker Amoruso has not recovered from a muscular problem in time for the Stadio Granillo encounter, a heavy blow as he has so far scored three of their total five Serie A goals this season.

“We will try to evaluate the condition of everyone before kick-off and put out the best Reggina side available,” commented Coach Ficcadenti, who is still looking for his first top flight victory.

“Inter are a very difficult opponent, but at the same time very stimulating for us. I have already stated several times that they are the prime candidates for the title considering the quality of their squad.

“On paper out chances are incredibly slim, but we will not sit back and watch Inter, we do not intend to be passive,” continued Ficcadenti.

“With concentration, aggression and a little bit of luck, we could contrast a tough team. If we leave them time to think, they could hurt us at any time.”

As far as the tactician is concerned, the crowd at the Stadio Granillo can be decisive in this tie.

“The support and the confidence of our fans in games like these can only help a young team.”

With Amoruso sidelined and Francesco Modesto suspended, it looks as if Dane Mike Tullberg will get the nod to partner Ciccio Cozza upfront.

Reggina have not scored in this fixture since 2002, but two of the last three Serie A editions ended goalless, so Inter are not automatically assured victory in Calabria.

Reggina are always fighting for their lives and the last I saw of Inter they were playing some of the ebst football around. If I can then I'll catch this game but I have a feeling Benfica is at the same time, but I'll have to check. Hope for an upset but it would be a massive one.
