Shaun Maloney's stunning free-kick salvaged a point for Aston Villa as they drew 1-1 with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The hosts started brightly and were rewarded for their early endeavour after nine minutes as Danny Higginbotham rose highest to glance Ross Wallace's teasing corner past Scott Carson. But Villa levelled after 73 minutes as Maloney whipped home a free-kick.
