England manager Steve McClaren has concerns about defenders Wes Brown and Sol Campbell after both skipped training on Tuesday. The 27-year-old Brown is having treatment for the knee complaint which forced him to sit out Manchester United FC's weekend win over Wigan Atheletic FC, while the 33-year-old Campbell of Portsmouth FC has an achilles injury. England will tackle Estonia and Russia in Group E.

GARETH BARRY has been given the nod ahead of Frank Lampard for Saturday’s tie with Estonia.

England boss Steve McClaren is set to give Barry the chance to continue his excellent form in midfield — despite Lamps being back to fitness.

McClaren oversaw a training session yesterday where Aston Villa skipper Barry played alongside his close pal Steven Gerrard in the middle.

Chelsea star Lamps, 29, has played just 90 minutes against Bolton in the last six weeks.

Barry, 26, stole the show after stepping in for the crocked Stamford Bridge man during last month’s 3-0 defeats of Israel and Russia.

And he said: “I’m happy the manager is thinking about me alongside some great players.

“I know I can do the same job as in the last two games — and the manager knows it, too.

“Last month’s qualifiers at Wembley were the biggest games of my career.

“Playing in Moscow would be even bigger, considering what’s at stake, so I want to play.”

Barry admitted his life has been turned on its head since he proved he is the perfect midfield partner for Gerrard.

The Villa star said: “There was a time when I’d virtually given up hope of playing for England again.

“I made my debut with Steven in 2000 but then there were two or three years when I didn’t make the squad.

“No one ever told me what I was doing wrong, or what I needed to improve.

“But when your name’s not even being mentioned for so long you do sort of give up hope. But the change of England manager last year made me believe my chance might come again.”

And Barry believes the turning point in his career came when Martin O’Neill took charge at Villa in August 2006 and moved him to central midfield in April.

He added: “Martin said to me ‘If you stay with me you’ll improve as a player and get your England recall’. And he’s been proved right, which shows what a clever manager he is.

“Around that time I was wondering whether it might be better for my career to move on.

“When I heard Martin was coming it got me thinking it would be better to stick around.

“My aim at the start of the season was to get back into the England squad.

“But I want to make more of my England career and I’m confident I can do that.”

MICHAEL OWEN has been warned not to play on Moscow’s artificial pitch.

The England striker is set to start against Estonia at Wembley on Saturday after recovering from a groin injury.

But Newcastle star Owen should NOT be risked on Russia’s surface on Wednesday according to Scotland and Birmingham City striker Gary O’Connor.

He played on the Luznikhi pitch for Lokomotiv Moscow and warned it can be especially dangerous for players recovering from muscle problems.

He said: “If I was Michael Owen I would not want to risk anything on that pitch.

“It used to hurt me for three or four days after I’d played on the it. I would really ache because it’s just not a natural surface.

“It really messes with your body. So, if anyone is a doubt with a muscle injury, they could be in trouble.”

I would laugh so mcuh if England managed to drop points. I don't see it somehow though, especially not at Wembley. 4-0 victory and all the hype to come back.

Campbell To Replace Terry

Steve McClaren has confirmed Sol Campbell is expected to deputise for injured England captain John Terry against Estonia.
Terry has been ruled out of the Euro 2008 qualifier at Wembley after suffering a knee injury in training and will have his fitness assessed ahead of the trip to Russia next week.
Campbell is set to return to the England line-up for the first time since McClaren took over after the 2006 World Cup and will partner Rio Ferdinand against Estonia.
McClaren is confident the Portsmouth defender, who will win his 70th cap, is a more-than capable replacement for Terry.
"The team will be confirmed this evening but I can say that Sol Campbell will be the likely one to replace John Terry," McClaren said on Sky Sports News.
"To be able to call upon someone of that experience and that quality, with the way he's playing at his club as well, is tremendous.
"He will add to the team, we're talking about leaders being important in any team and Sol Campbell certainly epitomises leadership."

Massive decision

McClaren must also decide whether to recall Frank Lampard to the starting line-up after he missed September's qualifiers through injury.
Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry impressed in the absence of Lampard in the wins over Israel and Russia last month.
"It's a massive decision and it's a good one to have because we've got two players, Gareth Barry and Frank Lampard, who have performed well," McClaren said.
"Frank consistently over the years and Gareth Barry over the last two games has come in a really performed well so it's one of the toughest decisions this week and will be finalised later."
McClaren insists he will be selecting the best team, rather than the best individuals, against Estonia and Russia.

Team game

He added: "It's not about individuals, it's about the team, and it's about qualification and getting back into that tournament and having a chance of winning.
"So you have to play as a team and we've epitomised that over the last four or five games and it's important we continue that.
"It's not about individuals and individuals must understand that."

Liverpool ace Steven Gerrard will captain England against Estonia in John Terry's absence.
With usual captain Terry out of Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier, head coach Steve McClaren has asked Gerrard to take the armband.
Gerrard is hopeful Terry will be fit enough to return against Russia on Wednesday, but is happy to be captain in his absence.
"I think JT's got a bit of a knee problem. Hopefully he'll be able to play on Wednesday," he said live on Sky Sports News.
"The manager has told me I'm skipper. To be captain at the new Wembley will be a special day for myself."

Selection headache

With Frank Lampard fit and available following injury, the question has been asked who Gerrard would rather play alongside.
Aston Villa ace Gareth Barry was superb for England against Israel and Russia, but is not guaranteed to retain his place against Estonia.
However, Gerrard does not mind who McClaren opts to select to play alongside him in midfield.
"They are all great midfielders, whether it's Gareth or Frank," he continued. "That's a difficult decision for the manager.
"I feel comfortable playing alongside both of them."

Professional

England can book their place in Austria and Switzerland next summer with back-to-back wins, although Gerrard is not taking Estonia lightly.
"It's difficult. It's around the corner and it's a massive game. We have one eye on the Russia game," he continued.
"We can only enjoy a big, big night in Russia if we're professional (against Estonia)."

Rooney scores his fist competitive goal for England since he scored aganst Croatia at Euro 2004. That just goes to show how over rated he is and that he can't make it at the top level.

Estonia is one of the worst teams in the qualifiers.

ENGLAND took a giant step towards Euro 2008 by beating Estonia at Wembley.

Shaun Wright-Phillips, Wayne Rooney and an own goal from Taavi Rahn fired Steve McClaren's men closer to next summer's finals.

They will now travel to Moscow for Wednesday's crunch Group E qualifier with Russia.

The only worry for boss McClaren was an injury to Ashley Cole that saw the left-back carried off at the start of the second half.

Wright-Phillips gave England a 10th-minute lead when he latched on to a pass from Micah Richards and drilled a low shot under Estonia keeper Mart Poom from a narrow angle.

England were completely dominating and took advantage by scoring twice in the space of three minutes to move into a 3-0 lead.

Rooney bagged his first competitive goal since the Euro 2004 finals after 32 minutes.

Joe Cole was the creator as he sped past Aleksandr Dmitrijev on the left flank, before picking out Rooney with his low cross. The forward had time to turn before sending a low shot past Poom’s dive, via a slight deflection off Raio Piiroja.

England struck again thanks to a spectacular own goal from Rahn. The Estonia midfielder tried to intercept a ball into the box from Ashley Cole but only succeeded in heading past Poom from 15 yards.

But there was a concern for McClaren after 48 minutes when Ashley Cole suffered an ankle injury and was replaced by Phil Neville.

The Chelsea left-back went over on his left ankle when involved in a challenge with Estonia striker Kaimar Saag and was carried off on a stretcher.

Much of the sting had gone out of the game, with England happy to hold on to a fifth successive win in their group.

Paul Robinson was kept busy as he was forced to turn away Joel Lindpere's curling effort from the edge of the box.

But McClaren was delighted to bypass this banana skin ahead of the big challenge in midweek.

England: Robinson, Richards, Campbell, Ferdinand (Lescott 46), A Cole (Neville 49), Wright-Phillips, Gerrard, Barry, J Cole, Rooney, Owen (Lampard 70). Subs Not Used: James, Bentley, Crouch, Defoe.

Estonia: Poom, Kruglov, Stepanov, Piiroja, Jaager, Rahn, Klavan, Dmitrijev, Lindpere, Kink (Viikmae 62), Saag. Subs Not Used: Aksalu, Allas, Reim, Rooba, Barengrub, Terehhov.

Booked: Rahn, Lindpere

Referee: Nicolai Vollquartz (Denmark)

ASHLEY COLE is a major doubt for England's clash with Russia on Wednesday.

The left-back injured his ankle in the 3-0 win over Estonia at Wembley and underwent a scan on Saturday evening.

The Chelsea ace was carried off on a stretcher early in the second half after a collision with Kaimar Saag.

England boss Steve McClaren said: “He rocked his ankle blocking a shot.

“It doesn’t look good but injuries can settle down in 24 hours and it is a critical period. We’ll know more on Sunday evening when we reassemble.”

John Terry missed the win over Estonia with a knee injury but has not been ruled out of the Russia clash.

McClaren added: “He was a lot better today and a lot more positive than he was on Thursday.

“He’s another one where 24 hours can be a long time for injuries and we’re just hoping that come Monday he’ll be able to train.”

McClaren wants England to wrap up their Euro 2008 qualification in Moscow.

He said: “We’ve won our last five qualifiers 3-0. We beat Russia a few weeks ago and there is a lot of belief and confidence.

“With this team and the players we have got, wherever we go and whoever we play we go out to win. We don’t go out to draw.

“Whatever system or tactics we use, it will be a great opportunity to go out and win the game and qualify.”

Wayne Rooney ended his goal drought in competitive England matches that stretched all the way back to Eur0 2004.

And the striker is confident of completing the job against the Russians.

Roo said: “We know it will be difficult and it will be a tough game but we’ve got to go out there and attempt to do the job we know we have to do.

“There is definitely the belief and quality in this squad to get a result. There are a few younger players in the squad now - but with the same, if not more, quality.”

JOHN TERRY will play through the pain barrier to lead England to Euro 2008.

SunSport can reveal Terry is intent on captaining the team against Russia in Moscow despite a knee injury which may need surgery.

Terry missed the match with Estonia but will risk a club-v-country row if he claims he is fit to play on Wednesday.

The Blues skipper has been told he needs up to two weeks to recover either by complete rest or a minor operation.

But if Terry insists on turning out for England in Moscow it will mean he is unavailable for Chelsea for a longer period.

Three Lions boss Steve McClaren is confident his captain will be OK to travel to Russia and has been told by Terry he intends to start.

McClaren said: “John is a lot better than he was on Thursday.

“He’ll be assessed over the next few days and a decision will be made on Monday as to whether he will travel to Russia.

“So there’s still hope and knowing John Terry as we all do, we’re buoyed by that and we’re trying everything possible to get him fit.”

Terry’s injury is understood to be a small piece of debris — possibly a bit of chipped bone or cartilage — floating in his knee area.

It is a common complaint which causes pain and discomfort. But a player can still compete, although he may need an injection.

It is understood the Chelsea captain has been told he must either rest to see if the chip disintegrates naturally or have keyhole surgery.

If he had withdrawn from the squad immediately after his scan on Thursday, it is possible he would be fit for Chelsea’s match against Middlesbrough next weekend.

But if he chooses to play in Wednesday’s crunch game in Moscow, he could miss at least two Premier League outings and the Champions League tie with Schalke.

Terry, who also has a fractured cheekbone and a broken toe, is intensely patriotic and has made clear his desire to play for his country even if it means suffering pain.

Blues boss Avram Grant is fully aware of the situation but has opted not to intervene.

RUSSIA captain Andrei Arshavin last night fired a warning to England boss Steve McClaren: We’ll knock you out!

The Zenit midfielder is baying for revenge after last month’s 3-0 defeat at Wembley.

And he vowed to teach England a lesson on the artificial pitch at Luzhniki Stadium. Arshavin, 26, said: “It will be an honour to beat England.

“After our defeat many people in our country think we are not able to qualify for Euro 2008 and that we could never beat England.

“We will prove our critics wrong by playing at a high level and winning.”

But Arshavin has taken pains not to repeat last month’s criticism of England keeper Paul Robinson.

As SunSport revealed last week they could be team-mates at Spurs next year.

Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick has given England boss Steve McClaren his backing, despite the Euro 2008 qualifying defeat in Russia.

England need Croatia or Russia to slip up in their last Group E games, with their best hope lying with Russia's trip to Israel next month.
Barwick said: "Steve has our support but our job is to focus on Croatia.
"It is a very big day when Russia play Israel on 17 November, we need Israel to stop them winning and help us."
Interview: FA chief executive Brian Barwick
Interview: Former England boss Graham Taylor

He added: "Steve has a job to do and he must now get the players ready for the Croatia game.
"We know we need a favour but it is desperately important that we continue to concentrate on qualification."
McClaren himself refuses to believe his side's hopes of reaching the finals in Austria and Switzerland are over.
"We still have hope, it is not the end," McClaren insisted. "It would be a huge disappointment if we did not get there but we are not even thinking about that at the moment.
"We are in a results business. Now we have to rely on Israel getting one for us.
"We still have one game to go. Russia have two. That is the reality. Let's see where we are after 12 games."
McClaren has been in charge since August 2006, when he was promoted from the role of assistant to Sven-Goran Eriksson, who is now manager of Manchester City.

England played very well and I am as disappointed as anyone

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson on the defeat by Russia

The Swede believes McClaren should keep his job, despite the 2-1 defeat in Moscow, which leaves England's hopes of playing in Austria and Switzerland next summer hanging by a thread.
"England still have a possibility of qualifying - and I hope that they will," said Eriksson. "Steve is my friend, I worked with him for five-and-a-half years and I feel sorry for him.
"England played very well and I am as disappointed as anyone. I don't think England deserved to lose. They should have at least had a draw."
The defeat has intensified the pressure on McClaren, who faces the prospect of being the first manager to fail to lead England to the finals of a major tournament since Graham Taylor in 1994.
And Taylor told BBC 5Live: "If Steve does go he will be the sixth England manager to go in the last 17 years, compared with four in the previous 28 years.
"Changing the manager is not necessarily the answer. What we have to look at is our record in international football over so many years. It's poor.
606: DEBATE
Give your reaction to Barwick's comments

"I thought it was a great game, fantastic atmosphere but the wrong result. Russia were first class. What they play is a short passing and very swift game.
"We do not play that at international level. That's not in our culture. We've got to look much deeper at what we expect properly and rightly expect from our national side.
"If you look over the years we have not been successful. There is something deeper than just the manager."
Wayne Rooney's stunning first-half volley put McClaren's team in control before a brace from Russian substitute Roman Pavluchenko inside four second-half minutes stunned the visitors.
"It was disappointing for everyone because for 70 minutes we looked in control," added Barwick.
"The game got away from us in four minutes, we went from looking on course for qualification to now needing help from others.
"There are all sorts of twists and turns in qualification campaigns and until the point passes where we cannot qualify, we must go for broke to try to get there."

We need to take it on the chin, take responsibility for where we are and try to win our last game

England midfielder Steven Gerrard

However, stand-in captain Steven Gerrard believes England are unlikely to qualify for the European Championship.
"It is looking doubtful," said the Liverpool midfielder. "We will see it out until the end and, hopefully, Israel can do us a favour.
"It was a very shell-shocked dressing room. The players are hurting and down.
"We need to take it on the chin, take responsibility for where we are and try to win our last game."
Meanwhile, Wigan striker Emile Heskey, who was influential in wins over Israel and Russia in September, is unlikely to be fit in time for England's final group game.
He broke a bone in his foot in September and Latics boss Chris Hutchings said: "The scans have revealed that everything went OK and they are very satisfied with the way it has gone but I would imagine that his recovery will be three or four weeks.
"We are governed by the medical staff of the rehab about what he can and can't do. "But, in saying that, hopefully, after the international break he shouldn't be too far away. It's a matter of getting the match fitness into him then."

Defiant McClaren vows to ride out England crisis

Written by: AFP

Steve McClaren, seen here 17 October 2007, knows the knives are out for him as England stumble towards Euro 2008 failure, but the beleaguered coach believes he is still the right man to lead his country.
LONDON (AFP) - Steve McClaren knows the knives are out for him as England stumble towards Euro 2008 failure, but the beleaguered coach believes he is still the right man to lead his country.

McClaren's team will be eliminated from the race to next year's finals if Russia win their last two matches, forcing England's star-studded squad to miss a major tournament for the first time in 14 years.

It is a position that reflects badly on McClaren and the tone of the debate after England's potentially decisive defeat against Russia was that he had been out-witted by opposition manager Guus Hiddink, providing conclusive proof that he was out of his depth.

A host of potential replacements were already being discussed by fans and pundits, with former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho and Aston Villa's Martin O'Neill the bookmakers' favourites.

If McClaren took to heart the frenzy of criticism that followed his side's meltdown in Moscow last week, he could have been forgiven for thinking he was out of a job already.

But he is convinced England have progressed enough during his year-long tenure for him to warrant more time to see his rebuilding process through.

"I thought I was equipped for the job at the beginning, I thought it after five games, half-way through, three-quarters of the way through and I feel that now," he said.

"We are building something. People can see that. It is for other people to judge whether I deserve more time.

"I enjoy the job. They are a great set of players to work for and the spirit has been excellent all the way through.

"The momentum has built up as we have gone on. Unfortunately, we have just lost that momentum."

McClaren knows he will be ridiculed in some quarters if a England team including the likes of Wayne Rooney, John Terry, Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen are absent from the Euro finals.

It is an unpleasant prospect but one he insists he can deal with.

Of course, I will think about it," McClaren said. "I will deal with it as I have dealt with everything else.

"This is a big job. It is a high pressure job. I feel as if whatever has come at me, I have handled. We have all handled it and we have come through it. You can see that.

"We all want to achieve. It is my job to make sure we do."

One of the few players to flourish under McClaren has been Micah Richards.

The Manchester City defender belied his youth and inexperience at the highest level to give another mature display in Moscow and he insists McClaren has the squad's total support.

"We are 100 per cent behind the manager. He's had a lot of injuries and always picks what he thinks is his strongest team," Richards told BBC Radio Five Live.

"Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose but he always stands up and takes the criticism and doesn't blame the players even though we should all share it."

Comparisons between the England football and rugby union players have been unflattering in the extreme to Richards and his team-mates, with accusations that the footballers don't play with pride infuriating the 19-year-old.

"The players do care. We are always proud to pull on the shirt and always up for the game when we go out and cross that white line."

deny crisis meeting over McClaren
Written by: AFP

English Football Association chiefs have denied that an emergency board meeting has been scheduled to decide the fate of national team manager Steve McClaren, seen here in October 2007.
LONDON (AFP) - English Football Association chiefs have denied that an emergency board meeting has been scheduled to decide national team manager Steve McClaren's fate.

A newspaper report in England on Friday claimed the FA had agreed to meet on November 22 - one day after England's final Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia.

It was suggested that if England have failed to qualify for the finals, the FA want a quick resolution over McClaren's future because a delegation, including the beleaguered coach, is due to fly to South Africa the next day for the 2010 World Cup qualifying draw.

But Sir Dave Richards, chairman of the Premier League and a member of the FA's international committee, insisted there was no crisis meeting on the agenda.

"There is no board meeting scheduled and that is absolutely categorical," Richards said.

Rooney To Miss Croatia Game

England's chances of success against Croatia in the upcoming Euro 2008 qualifier have taken a significant dent following an injury to Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney...

England coach Steve McClaren has spoken of his disappointment after discovering that Wayne Rooney's injury will prevent his taking part in the upcoming Euro 2008 qualifier against Croatia.

He told Sky Sports, "It is hugely disappointing for us and him.

"Given the form he has been in and the contribution he has made to England over the last two games means it is a blow.

"But we have to deal with it, like we have dealt with situations like these before.

"It is an opportunity for someone else to come and do a job."

Rooney has hit two goals for England so far this season, along with a further seven for Manchester United in various competitions.

What's more, his fine work for the Red Devils landed him the Premiership Player of the Month award in October.

However, he won't be able to repeat that feat in November, with a Manchester United spokesperson saying, "Wayne Rooney picked up an ankle injury in training and will be out for about four weeks."

That lengthy spell of absence will see him miss four Premiership encounters, not to mention the Champions League tie with Sporting Lisbon at Old Traffod.

However, he may be able to make a comeback in the Eternal City to face Roma on December 12th.

Rooney, 22, already has 40 caps for his country.
