Portsmouth boss Redknapp: Liverpool can win title

Portsmouth boss Redknapp: Liverpool can win title
tribalfooball.com - July 27, 2007

Portsmouth boss Harry Redknapp reckons Liverpool will be genuine contenders for the Premier League title this season. Rafael Benitez's side take on Pompey in the final of the Asia Trophy in Hong Kong Stadium on Friday evening.
And Redknapp is confident that after a summer of heavy investment, the coming campaign will not prove to be another false dawn for Reds supporters.
"I do think they will be contenders this year," he said.
"They're looking very strong. The backbone of the team is still Carragher and Gerrard, two homegrown players, but they've added a lot of quality again and will be a lot closer to Manchester United and Chelsea.
"Tottenham are a team that could push into the top four this year as well if anyone's going to. They've got that bigger squad and have spent a lot of money over the last couple of years so they'll be very strong.
"West Ham, Newcastle, Aston Villa, they'll all improve, but I think everyone will have a go this year.
"We'll try to improve on what we did last season. We finished ninth and missed out on Europe on the last day of the season, but I think with this squad the aim is to get a European place this year and I think it's possible.
He added: "I'm quite happy with the squad.
"Unlike other years where we've been desperate to get players in just to have half a chance, we're strong this year. If I can add a bit extra, I will, but I've got to find the right player."

Birmingham cool Ghaly enthusiasm

Birmingham cool Ghaly enthusiasm
tribalfooball.com - July 28, 2007

Birmingham denied reports they have already signed Tottenham midfielder Hossam Ghaly, insisting the deal is "nowhere near" being finalised. The Egyptian international has been quoted claiming he has passed a medical and signed a contract with the Midlands club.
Ghaly told Dream TV: "I have put the finishing touches to the move and signed the contract.
"I passed the medical and will link up with my new Birmingham team-mates within the next couple of days."
But a Blues spokesman said the deal was "nowhere near" being finalised.

tribalfooball.com - July 28, 2007

Adel Taarabt was delighted to win the man-of-the-match award for Tottenham in their victory over Orlando Pirates. "I was very proud," Taarabt told Tottenham's website. "To come to South Africa and to receive this made me very happy, my family happy and of course I'm pleased for the team.
"I'm happy. Playing with the team always helps improve your confidence and now it's up to me to show that I am worth a place in the team for the rest of the year."

Birmingham manager Steve Bruce is confident Spurs midfielder Hossam Ghaly will finally sign for the club within the next 24 hours.

But Bruce is virtually resigned to losing his battle to sign Ghaly's club and country team-mate Mido, rating his chances as 'less than 50-50.'

Ghaly was in Birmingham on Saturday to tie up his move and, although further talks are planned, Bruce is optimistic the Egypt international will become his eighth signing of the summer.

Bruce said: 'We are still in talks with Hossam and we hope that, by Monday, he will be added to the squad all being well.

'I let one midfielder go in Stephen Clemence and that was a tough decision. If Ghaly is as good as Clemence was in his five years here then I'll be delighted.'

On Mido, Bruce said: 'The deal looks a bit off. It's to do with different clauses. I can't say more as that would not be fair on the player.

'It's fair to say our chances are less than 50-50. We still hope we can pull it off but it's noting to do with finances.'

Bruce added: 'I'd look for another striker if one was available but it's whether you can get one. We have four weeks before the window closes and last year we did our best bit of business just before the start of the season.'

Bruce has been linked with Middlesbrough striker Aiyegbeni Yakubu but his agent Barry Silkman believes the player would be out of Birmingham's price range at more than £10million.

It is now official that Hossam Ghaly signed for Blues a 3 year contract for a fee worth £3m.

Birmingham official website announced the signing of Hossam Ghaly for the Blues a few hours ago. The Egyptian put pen on paper this morning in a 3 year deal which will keep him at Birmingham till 2010.

The 25 year old Egyptian midfielder should not have a problem obtaning a conditional work permit and so, the transfer is not completed.

Following the signature of Ghaly, Blues coach Steve Bruce expressed his delight with the transfer saying that the Egyptian will fill the gap that was left by the depaarture of Stephen Clemence.

"The signing of Hossam is an excellent acquisition," said Bruce.

"With the loss of Stephen Clemence, he will play a vital role in the middle of the park for us this season. he added

Bruce continued to praise the Egyptian by saying: "I was always very impressed with him whenever I watched him play for Spurs last season.
"He has all the credentials that we are looking for in a player, he is only 25, a very talented international who still has the hunger to succeed in the Premiership.

"As well as being technically gifted, Hossam can also stand up to the physical side of the game so he will give us that extra edge in midfield.

"We are delighted to have him on board."
