LONDON (AFP) - Tottenham will complete the signing of Wales defender Chris Gunter from Cardiff for a fee of around two million pounds when the transfer window opens in January.

The Premier League club confirmed on Monday that they finalised a transfer agreement with Cardiff over the weekend.

Gunter, who has won three caps for Wales, has had a medical with Spurs and the 18-year-old will join his new club as soon as the transfer window opens on New Year's Day.

The 18-year-old full-back has made 33 first-team appearances and won three Wales caps since breaking into the Bluebirds first team in August last year.

The two clubs reached agreement over what is reported to be a £2million deal last week and the player underwent a medical over the weekend.

"In our situation as a Championship football club, we have to consider anything of this magnitude," Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale said last week. "Chris has indicated he wants to talk to them and we have given permission.

"I think with the price itself we would have to consider it no matter what the situation was financially. Clearly given the challenge we've had with Langston, it's made the financial security of the club more acute that we do look at this sort of transfer.

"But if Chris had said he wasn't interested in going, we wouldn't have sold him."

The two clubs reached agreement over what is reported to be a £2million deal last week and the player underwent a medical over the weekend.

Bluebirds boss Dave Jones, meanwhile, insisted that he could be a hit at White Hart Lane.

"He is a young prospect - we wish him all the best," Jones told Sky Sports News.

"You can't deny the lad the opportunity, he's done really well and broken into the full international team.

"We're sad to see him go but there is no way we could have kept hold of him or stood in his way."
