Torres saves sorry Reds

An injury time equaliser from Fernando Torres saved Liverpool from their second home defeat in five days.

Torres headed home in the second minute of added time to earn his side a point in a 2-2 draw with Tottenham at Anfield.

Andrei Voronin had put Liverpool, who lost to Marseille in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, in front when he poked home on 12 minutes after Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson had spilled a Steven Gerrard free-kick.

However, Robbie Keane pounced in copy cat poaching style either side of the half-time interval to put Spurs in front.

Keane latched on to a Dimitar Berbatov flick on to prod in his first on 45 minutes and with Liverpool still stunned by the equaliser the Spurs striker pounced again in the first minute after half-time.

On 47 minutes Berbatov again provided the assist as Keane beat Jamie Carragher to the ball to steer past Jose Reina in the Liverpool goal.

Liverpool looked destined for their first Premier League defeat of the season as frustrations grew, but Torres demonstrated why he earned such a high summer price tag as he saved the day.

Under pressure

The match brought together two managers under pressure; Rafa Benitez because of his tinkering with the side and the abject European defeat in midweek, and Martin Jol because his job seems to be under threat on a match-to-match basis.

There was extra tension in the air, but it did not stop Spurs from venturing forward. They almost took the lead after just two minutes when Gareth Bale curled a 20-yard free-kick inches wide of a post.

Voronin saw a 20-yard shot easily saved by Robinson four minutes later, but after 12 minutes the Ukrainian was more successful.

Jenas had pulled back Gerrard 25 yards out and, when the Liverpool skipper crashed the free-kick through the wall, Robinson could only half stop the deflected effort, and Voronin punished him by scoring on the rebound.

Undaunted Spurs retaliated with a flicked header from Keane which dropped just wide, and then a right-footed drive from the Irishman flashed across Reina's goal.

Gerrard almost made it 2-0 with a 20-yard free-kick which crashed against the foot of Robinson's left-hand post after 28 minutes.

Open game

Liverpool should have scored after 34 minutes when Torres, Voronin and Gerrard broke away, but the chance was wasted in the box after a flurry of passes and a Voronin effort was deflected away.

But Spurs deservedly equalised after 44 minutes when Dimitar Berbatov nodded on Robinson's long clearance, and Keane got in between Steve Finnan and Sami Hyypia to flick a shot past the advancing Reina.

Two minutes into the second half Keane struck again. Robinson's free-kick for a foul by Torres soared down the field to be headed on by Berbatov, and this time Keane got to the glanced pass to lift the ball over Reina into the roof of the net.

Spurs continued to come forward and, after Bale's grafting had retained possession on the left, the ball was transferred to Jenas, who fired wide from the edge of the box.

Liverpool were being forced into mistakes as Spurs continued to press for a third. The home side did break out, but after Voronin's surge the chance fell to Gerrard, who drove over.

Desperate Reds

There was an air of desperation now about Liverpool - yet another team had come to Anfield and attacked them - and they were not enjoying it.

The hard-working Teemu Tainio was replaced by Steed Malbranque after 75 minutes, with Liverpool still showing little sign of an equaliser.

That was until Robinson spilled another long-range effort, this time from Steve Finnan. But Dawson managed to hook the ball away from the danger area.

Robinson saved well at his near post from Javier Mascherano, while John Arne Riise and Torres both blazed efforts high over.

Mascherano fired just wide from 20 yards, with time apparently running out for Liverpool who had not been able to mount the expected grandstand finish.

But two minutes into injury-time, Torres finally found some space in the box when he rose to head home Finnan's cross to give Liverpool a fortunate point.

Torres voted fans star man v Spurs

Fernando Torres was voted Liverpool's star performer during the 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Sunday by the Reds fans who took part in an exclusive vote on this website.

Meanwhile Andry Voronin took the Liverpoolfc.tv accolade.

Klinsmann ready to discuss Tottenham job

Jurgen Klinsmann says he's prepared to open talks with Tottenham.

Germany's 2006 World Cup coach is seeking the right opening to begin his career in club management and believes his former club could provide it.

The Observer says Klinsmann is concerned about majority shareholder Enic's plans to sell the club and last week attempted to contact the investment group's principal investor, Joe Lewis, to ascertain his exact intentions.

The German would manage Tottenham if Lewis gives him an undertaking that he will not permit a takeover inside the next three years. Alternatively, if Enic were prepared to hand over ownership of the company in the near future Klinsmann is ready to enter into discussions with the new owners to see if he could work with him.

Dervite delighted with Tottenham comeback

Dorian Dervite is delighted to be kicking off his comeback next week at Tottenham.

The defender has been missing since January and he told the Spurs website: "On Monday I will start a programme of one day training then one day off and hopefully I will soon get better and stronger.

"It is not completely perfect, I will have to continue working in the gym to make my knee stronger and hopefully in a couple of weeks it will be perfect.

"I've had good very good rehab here and I've worked hard so I think I am getting the reward for that," added Dervite, before going on to admit there will be a few nerves when he takes to the training pitches again.

"I am excited but also a little nervous about the first contact work, but the confidence for that will come in time. I am not sure when I will be ready to play, but hopefully it will be soon - we'll see."

Tottenham's Bent puts England on backburner

Darren Bent admits his England ambitions are on the backburner as he battles to establish himself at Tottenham.

"I'm hoping to be back as soon as possible but it's been difficult to press my claims in a Spurs team with so many good forwards," Bent revealed.

"Having said that, I am loving the experience at Tottenham and the competition is good."

Bent: I'm better player for Tottenham move

Tottenham striker Darren Bent is happy with their UEFA Cup draw and believes they have a big chance of winning the competition this season.

"I think we have a great chance," he told the Sunday Mirror. "I was really pleased when I saw the draw.

"All of our strikers are capable of scoring goals from anywhere and it's brilliant.

"You can learn so much from them and that's what I've done.

"I think I've become a better player."

Pekhart hopeful of Tottenham breakthrough

Tottenham starlet Tomas Pekhart is hopeful that he is closing on his first-team debut for the club.

The 18-year-old was included in the squad for the Uefa Cup clash at Anorthosis Famagusta last week, but he did not travel as Spurs' management realised he was not registered for the competition.

"I was looking forward very much to travelling there and I was then sorry it did not turn out," Pekhart admitted.

"On the other hand, it might have been a sign that they really do count on me for the future. I hope it was not just a coincidence."

Pekhart is ready for action, but he knows competition is intense at White Hart Lane.

"I don't want to rush it at any cost, I want to be prepared for that [his debut] as much as possible," he toldCTK.

"I know that I could be given only a single chance to play for the first-team. And if I didn't perform well, then I might not be given any other.

"It is true though that to play for Tottenham's first team is my big dream. I must work hard and be patient.

"It is true that the competition at Tottenham is huge. But for me it is great that I can learn a lot from such champions.

"After training I often stay with them and we train at shooting, or I can visit alone our special coach with whom we practice the one-on-ones or technique."

Robinson ruled out for Spurs clash with Newcastle

Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson is out of Monday's clash with Newcastle United with a calf strain.

Opinion has been divided over whether Robinson was at fault for Roman Pavlyuchenko's winner at the Luzhniki Stadium, with defeat leaving Steve McClaren's side on the brink of failing to qualify for Euro 2008.

Spurs boss Martin Jol has stuck by the 28-year-old this season following a series of mistakes - but because of his injury, Robinson will be replaced by Radek Cerny on Monday in the Barclays Premier League clash against Newcastle.

"Paul was assessed, and it showed that he had picked up a calf strain while on England duty that will prevent him playing for us on Monday," confirmed the Dutchman.

Jol added: "Paul is playing for us - and when he played for England he always did well.

"They were very satisfied with him - otherwise he would not be number one because at international level you can pick five, six or seven England goalkeepers.

"I'm a realistic man - you can come up with all the criticisms, and it's not my business. I want to focus on the Newcastle match."

Spurs striker Bent fit for Newcastle clash

Tottenham striker Darren Bent is confident of being fit for Monday's clash with Newcastle - after missing the game against Liverpool.

"I woke in the morning with a headache and a high temperature," Bent told the Spurs website. "The doctor told me I had a chest infection and couldn't play so I came straight home and luckily enough we have had the two weeks off with the international break and feel a lot better now.

"It wasn't nice, I wasn't sleeping too well and I didn't leave the house much in the following days. I'm getting over it now, still a bit bunged up, but as far as physical fitness goes I feel great."

Tottenham's Robinson comes clean on Russian winner

Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson has explained his role in Russia's winner against England on Wednesday night.

Robinson has shouldered the blame for the goal but England defenders were just as culpable as they were slow to react and he said: "I just parried it and maybe didn't get enough on it. I was unlucky not to get the second shot.

"We've got to pick ourselves up and deal with what we are left with. It seems like a kick in the teeth. It's difficult to take."

England players lost confidence in Tottenham's Robinson

England's players have lost confidence in Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson, it has been revealed.

The Guardian says Robinson's horror year means he no longer gets the benefit of the doubt and it will count for little that his performance in Moscow was flawless - apart from the spilled save that led to Russia's winner.

The word from the dressing room is that the players have lost confidence in him, and if Russia get the victory in Israel that means England can virtually forget about reaching Euro 2008, he faces the ignominy of being remembered as one of the principal factors in the failed qualifying campaign.

Newcastle owner Ashley linked with Tottenham takeover

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley is planning a stunning takeover bid of Tottenham.

The Sun says Paul Kemsley is ready to launch a bid for Tottenham with Ashley.

Multi-millionaire property developer Kemsley quit as Spurs vice-chairman this week after being blamed for the Juande Ramos fiasco.

Old friends Ashley and Kemsley are currently working together on a project to build a casino in Las Vegas.

And while billionaire Ashley bought a controlling interest in Toon in June, he is a lifelong Tottenham fan.
