Ex-Man City, West Ham star Wanchope retires

Paulo Wanchope has been forced to hang up his boots because of ongoing concerns over his fitness.

The former Manchester City, West Ham and Derby striker has played for nine clubs in seven countries in a 12-year career.

Wanchope scored 45 goals in 75 international appearances for Costa Rica and made the decision to call time on his career as he felt he could no longer perform at the level he desired.

The 31-year-old said: "I always gave 100 per cent to do things as well as possible. Sadly, my last performances were far from good enough and I have taken the decision to retire.

"It was a difficult decision to take, but it has to be taken. The truth is that in the last six months I had to make a great effort to recover after games and training. I gave everything and we all know about my knee problems.

"Of course, I will continue my career related to football as I have a great passion for this sport."

West Ham's Ashton determined to repay fans

West Ham striker Dean Ashton has promised to repay the club's fans' "brilliant" vocal support by giving them something to really sing about.

Ashton is on the mend again from a knee injury that has kept him out for the last five games - after spending nearly a full year on the sidelines recovering from the broken ankle sustained in training with England before the start of last season.

"The fans here have been absolutely brilliant with me. And I want to be out there for them."

He told the club's official website: "Their support has really boosted me coming back from the year I had. They are continually singing my name and when I think about the club and all its history I'm amazed by the backing I've had.

"Now I need to get out there again and give them something to really sing about. That's what I want to do as soon as I'm fit and right."

West Ham plan to launch US club

West Ham United are in talks with a Florida group about having a team play in the USA.

The ground-breaking move would see the Hammers play in United Soccer League One - America's equivalent of the Championship.

Francisco Marcos, president of the USL, claims West Ham will not be contravening rules.

He said: "FIFA rules only state that owners cannot have two clubs or teams competing in the same competition, so there's no problem here."

West Ham operations director Ben Illingworth and academy director Tony Carr spearheaded negotiations in Tampa on behalf of chairman Eggert Magnusson.

West Ham signed a deal with the USL at the end of July, a reciprocal arrangement involving academy players and branding. 'At that point the option to play in the USL was inserted in the agreement.

"We're looking to West Ham for setting a trend in terms of direct ownership," added Marcos.

"This would be very different in terms of responsibilities and commitment, like the difference between renting a flat and owning a house.

"But Umbro, West Ham's kit sponsors, also own 98 per cent of the USL and I own the other two per cent, so they will have all the help they need to get set up here."

Ljungberg ready for West Ham comeback

Freddie Ljungberg says he'll be fit for West Ham's next game against London rivals Tottenham.

"I am happy to be back to full strength with my body," he told whufc.com. "I feel strong and have had lots of time to recover. The last week at West Ham felt good, and I had great support from our rehab staff.

"I am looking forward to coming back, after the international games, to West Ham.

"Our next game is a local derby against Spurs and important to both clubs in a number of ways."

West Ham's Collison outstanding on Wales U21 debut

West Ham youngster Jack Collison enjoyed an outstanding debut for Wales U21 in their 4-0 defeat of Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The match was a triumph for 19-year-old Collison on his debut. The Hammers reserves skipper rounded off an influential display with a fine solo goal.

Coach Bryan Flynn said: "I'm really excited about the players coming through, as I think we have a talented bunch who will only get better as they progress.

"We gave a very good display at Wrexham, after working hard all week in training and this performance has shown that with the quality of our display and finishing.

"The boys are now really relishing Tuesday night's clash with the French in Cardiff."

West Ham plan bid for Liverpool prospect Hobbs

West Ham United are interested in Liverpool defender Jack Hobbs.

The People says Hammers spies watched the Anfield prospect in the reserves last week and will swoop if Rafa Benitez keeps overlooking him.

Hobbs has hardly figured since signing from Lincoln and could slip further down the pecking order if a new defender arrives in January.

West Ham v Tottenham

West Ham are suffering a costly dip in form at the moment, due to the absence of Bellamy and Ashton. Basically, without their main strikers, West Ham do not play half as good as they can. January should see the manager add a striker or two to the squad, but until then West Ham will suffer some poor results.

Robert Green is helping them stay put and it is surprising he is not in contention for a place in England squads. The Hammers 5-0 thrashing of Derby last time out cannot really be taken seriously, as both teams were terrible on the day, only Derby were much worse defensively than West Ham. West Ham desperately need their strikers back.

Spurs are unbeaten under Juande Ramos and look a more comfortable side now. Surprisingly, Robbie Keane is finding himself on the bench more, but Darren Bent and Defoe are making a good impression to the manager, so Spurs will have to rotate all four strikers more often.

With arguably the best bunch of strikers in the league, Spurs should have no more problems with goal-scoring. However, they will need to settle defensively but more importantly make sure the midfielders are creating enough to help the forward men. So long as the team form a good, creative combination, Spurs will quickly be back in the top ten.

Tottenham are a team on the up, West Ham are currently slipping down. I can only see these trends continuing, especially if West Ham perform as boringly as they did against Derby in the first half last time out. Tottenham are still short on confidence, but they should win this game.

Prediction: Narrow Away Win
