Whelan makes Jewell his first choice

Written by: AFP

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has made former manager Paul Jewell, seen here in 2006, his number one chance to take over from Chris Hutchings.
WIGAN, England (AFP) - Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has made former manager Paul Jewell his number one chance to take over from Chris Hutchings.

Jewell quit Wigan after helping the Premier League club avoid relegation in May, but Hutchings failed to make a success of replacing him and was sacked this week.

After several months off Jewell, who spent six years at Wigan, has indicated he is ready to return to management and Whelan is keen to bring him back to the JJB Stadium.

Asked if Jewell was his first choice, Whelan told BBC Radio Five: "Absolutely. If he applied for the job I'd certainly love to talk to Paul.

"I had a great relationship with him at Wigan Athletic. I'm delighted because if he is interested I'll be talking to him, certainly."

Jewell has yet to have any contact with Wigan about the job but he is determined to be back in the game soon.

He said: "Let me make it quite clear, I have had no contact with chairman Dave Whelan these past few days or anyone at the club for that matter.

"But, after six months away from management, I am ready and willing to return to work.

"Any offers that come my way I will consider and I firmly believe I will return to football refreshed and a better manager."

Barlow admits Wigan must break losing run

Wigan Athletic caretaker boss Frank Barlow admits they must break their losing run today against Tottenham.

"Everything's got to be controlled because as soon as there's a sign of losing control mentally, you'll take a massive knock on the field," he said.

"Hopefully we'll use that emotion and channel it the right way and what we're really looking for above anything else is for the supporters to see a passionate, determined performance from us." Although Wigan have endured a run of poor results, Barlow feels the team's recent performances deserved more.

The Latics twice led before going down 3-2 at Birmingham two weeks ago while they conceded late winners against Liverpool and Reading.

Barlow therefore believes his side only need to make small improvements in order to claim a much-needed win at Spurs and turn their fortunes around.

"We're not looking for miles, we're looking for inches," he said.

"An extra inch improvement here, an extra inch improvement there, and if we can find just a couple of extra inches on Sunday we'll come away with the three points.

"The frame of mind we must carry into it is that we're capable of coming away with the three points.

"Football's such a game of ups and downs. Little things make such big differences that you should never, ever go with any other feeling than thinking you can win the game. If you do that, you're beaten before you start."

Hutchings set for amazing Wigan return

Chris Hutchings is in line to make an amazing comeback at Wigan Athletic.

The Mail on Sunday says Hutchings could return to the JJB as Paul Jewell's assistant manager.

Jewell, who returned from a golfing holiday in Dubai yesterday, is ready to end his self-imposed exile from the game and would respond to any approach from Wigan chairman Dave Whelan. The word is, if Jewell does return, Hutchings, sacked just last week, would be his No 1 choice to be his No 2.

Wigan's Kirkland defends Robinson

Wigan Athletic goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has jumped to the defence of under pressure England rival Paul Robinson.

Wigan face Robinson's Tottenham today and Kirkland said: "It seems as if people want him to fail just so they can have a go.

"The stick has been unjustified. Everybody is jumping on his back when they should be getting behind England. I wouldn't have any reservations playing him against Croatia.

"Without a doubt, goalkeeper is the hardest position on the pitch. You can make 10 great saves but if you make one mistake, that's what you will be remembered for."

Quite apart from his concern for Robinson, Kirkland knows it is a massive afternoon for Wigan following the dismissal of Chris Hutchings.

He said: "We have a squad capable of pushing up the table but it's one thing saying it, we have to do it."

Scotland boss McLeish rejects Wigan

Scotland boss Alex McLeish has rejected an approach from Wigan Athletic.

The Mirror says McLeish was top of a wish list for the vacancy at the JJB but pulled back from the race yesterday.

The former Rangers chief is keen to manage in England but he has opted to stay with the Tartan Army.

Wigan may now go for a short-term solution and turn to veteran boss Joe Royle.
